U of Richmond Professor
I'm moving to Richmond with my wife and two small children and taking a position with the University of Richmond. We want to find a neighborhood that has the top schools, close to the University, preferably and older neighborhood. We're moving from Arlington, VA so we're used to a liberal neighborhood, best schools, mature tree-lined streets. We'd like the same in Richmond and I would LOVE to bike to work! Your thoughts?

Neighborhoods that feed into Tuckahoe elementary (Henrico County) would meet your requirements; however, they are also pricey & I'm not sure what range you are looking in. It may seem like a bargain to you since you are coming from Northern VA. Another option would be Mary Munford elementary -- this is in the city of Richmond and close to UofR. The downside would be that you would likely want to do private school after elementary in this neighborhood.
BTW, UofR is a wonderful school - I got my undergraduate degree there.
Best of luck!
Christine

The west end around U of R is quite nice and there are several chi-chi private schools there. The near west end is also nice and bike-able to U of R. I'm not sure about the public schools. The housing stock on the north side of Richmond (Bellevue, Ginter Park) is also really nice. And there's always the Fan, but you would be looking at private schools. The William Fox elementary school by me looks very nice, artsy, culturally diverse, with well-behaved kids. I'm a transplant from The People's Republic of Cambridge, MA, and find Richmond (the city) to be pretty liberal. What do you teach?

UR location
There are nice, older homes in and around UR. Also check along River Road--several older homes for sale there. Anything around UR is a good neighborhood. Check out Westhampton area and Sleepy Hollow. Also on and right off College Road are nice homes. You won't have a problem--lots to choose from as homes are slow in selling right now and you can bargain! Good luck. You will love Richmond and UR.

Seconded. I can't speak to the schools and don't think it's particularly "liberal" though. If that's really important to you, you're probably better off in "The Fan" (going towards downtown).
