Default How is the cost of living in Richmond?

Hello,

I am relocating to the Richmond area from Anchorage, AK. I am transferring with in the same company and my pay will remain the same. I have used the cost of living online calculators but I was just wondering what everyone's perspective was to the cost of living there in Richmond?

To me, Richmond seems pretty affordable, but of course it's relative to where you're coming from and certain parts of Richmond are much cheaper than others. Also, it depends on whether you're a renter or a homeowner. Utilities (water, gas and electric) seem the same or cheaper than other places I've lived (VA, IL, FL and NC). Food seems pretty cheap. I'm pretty sure that AK has no state income or sales tax so you will have to adjust to paying state income and sales tax. VA also has a personal property tax on vehicles. Car insurance seems reasonable. I really can't think of much that stands out to me as being really expensive here.

Have lived in Northern Virginia and Hawaii. Richmond is definitely more affordable.
