KEHARRI3 is on a distinguished road
Default 1st Time Richmond Renter

Hi! I will be moving to Richmond this fall to attend VCU as a third year undergrad student. I am currently in the process of looking for an apartment. I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas about where to begin looking (websites, real estate offices, apartment building names, etc.). I am interested in living in the fan preferably, or somewhere safe and relatively close to downtown. As a female living alone I am particularly concerned about finding a place in a good area, although I realize that crime is everywhere. Any info/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Also, how hard is it to find short-term leases? I have a friend moving down in January and I would like to live with her at that time, if possible.

I would check craigslist, Style Weekly, and the Richmond Times Dispatch for rentals. The fall is a very busy time when lots of folks are looking for apartments so you may want to move as fast as you can. It could be hard to find something temporary because of the influx of students. The Fan is lovely and full of great old houses, some of which have been made into apartments. You won't find very many large apartment buildings. I can only think of three that are larger than 6 apartments. There's a better chance you come across a little gem of a place that's half of a house with a courtyard in the back right near your new favorite restaurant. Some streets are better/safer than others so do try to see it for yourself. I have several friends with small children who choose to live in the Fan so it is generally safe. Oh, you may also see reference to the Upper Fan or Museum Districts. This is essentially still the Fan, just west of the Boulevard. Good luck!
