My husband's company keeps throwing out locations and I'm feverishly searching around.

We currently live near Augusta, Georgia. There are quite a few things that are important to us:

1. Good schools... we have a kindergartener that needs to be pushed. I don't want her to get away with the least little bit. I want her to reach for the stars. We would be willing to consider private school/magnet schools etc if neccessary. I want her in a diverse school.

2. A strong, active church. We currently attend a large Southern Baptist church. We are very involved in our church and it's various ministries.

3. I like the looks of the downtown area. I've read on here that some young families live downtown. Is there a certain area to check out? We would be renting.

4. I'm still working on my degree. I'd be researching colleges as well.

5. My husband would be working for Tmobile's call center (formerly Suncom) A decent commute would be great! I'm not quite sure of the location of the center yet.

If you're Southern Baptist , and coming to Richmond you would be in luck- as the Seminary Schools are here as well as The Southern Baptist Mission Boards. There are many many wonderful churches in the area. May I even reccomend my own- Tabernacle Baptist Church Tabernacle Baptist Church Welcome

We are currently working with refugees from East Asia- its a great experience! They speak a language called Karen. Its a little funny trying to speak to them in a thick Virginia drawl, lol. But they can understand me a little.

Its a wonderful church that has many thriving minstries. Its not a Mega Church by any means- although Richmond has those too.

The schools in Richmond are fair- not great, but fair. They have a very good elementary school in the city called Fox. Its very nice. But I would reccomend Private schools if possible- St. Catherine's, Collegiate, and St Christophers are all excellent schools

Im not sure what you mean by "downtown" area- if you're refering to "The Fan"- that used to be called the "West End". Its a nice area of Victorian Row Houses- and a great mix of older people, young people (VCU kids) and younger couples. Then Downtown- i.e. Shockoe Slip, Main St has flats (apartments for those not from Richmond, lol) They are a little expensive though. Not good for families

But check into Fox Elementary School in The Fan.

Good luck!

In general, the schools in Western Henrico and Chesterfield County have better test scores than the city of Richmond schools, but the city schools are typically more diverse. Whether testing well means that it will push and challenge your kindergartner, I'm not sure. Here are a couple of websites that might help you.

VDOE :: School Report Card

Great Schools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community

We tend to attend Southern Baptist/Baptist/non-denominational churches and had a very hard time here finding a church home (which is very strange considering at blueva points out the Mission Board is here). You might want to check out Bon Air Baptist.
