I second Azzurros and La Grotta for very good Italian restaurants. I still think Chez Max is the best French food in Richmond, better than Can Can which is more of a brasserie.
What ever happenned to Amici's on Cary? Haven't been there in ages, but it used to be so good!

Amici's is under renovation right now. Acacia should be wrapping up there new location soon just east of Carytown.

Tick . . .tock . . .
fester600, any thoughts? The weekend is upon us . . . .
These unrequited threads drive me nuts.
richmondpics, thanks for the update. We were old friends of Carlos at Amici, and loved it, but it was a bit too familiar/casual for "special occasion?"
"ACACIA?" I have been in and out of Richmond Guitar SO many times looking at that "opening soon" [another idea] sign there. And hoping . . . .
I love Chez Max, BTW, lovelongboatkey, but the 1970s-country-club/strip mall thing does put me off a bit for "special occasion." (I have a thing about those dropped-tile ceilings, I admit.) The food is dependably good and the service is very good/informed for Richmond. The fireplace is nice, if you request that room.
For "destination" French, I like Pomme in Gordonsville, but that is a drive. Beyond the suburbs. (But not bad if you tour the Horton vineyards!)
Are you still there, fester600?
At any rate, have a good weekend and best wishes for a great dinner.

Whynot, love Pomme in Gordonsville. I did not suggest it since it is a "drive" for most. I'm fortunate to be halfway between Richmond and Charlottesville so not too bad of a drive for me. I also love Tavern on the Rail and Obrigado's in Louisa, although I wouldn't call them special occasion restaurants. Just goes to prove that sometimes the "middle of nowhere" is a pretty good place to be!

Richmondpics, thanks for the update on Amici's. I will keep an eye out for it's re-opening.

Yes I am still here. Thanks for all of the recommendations. We ended up doing Bottom's Up Pizza (so good!) on Friday night and for our celebration Saturday we went to Buckheads. The steak was great but the service was less than perfect. All in all we had a great weekend in Richmond. Thanks again for all of you help!

YAY! Thanks, fester600, for coming back! Yeah, service is tricky -- especially on a Saturday night. Buckheads has a great wine list, though, and I hope that helped smooth things over.
I am just mad for Bottoms Up. Especially the original one downtown. If I lived closer, I'd be there all the time. I especially love the salads, but I love to order a whole pie "to go along with it." Then I take 3/4 of the pizza home. Truly one of my favorite spots downtown.
Thanks again, and don't be shy if you're back up this way.

I know fester600 has already visited, but I saw this in the Times Dispatch today. I've only eaten at LeMaire once but it was quite a treat.
