I’ve lived in Richmond all of my life (Henrico county’s West End). I went to Tuckahoe Middle and graduated from Freeman HS. I live in lower Tuckahoe now if that tells you anything... I’d recommend, but I’m partial, West End Henrico or Chesterfield. Goochland is a fast growing county (beautiful rolling hills) and the schools are growing too. Each county has it's downfalls and within each couny, there are better areas than others...

20+ year resident of Chesterfield and 3 of my 5 are in or have gone through schools in Chesterfield. I like the price of housing and a little more laid back atomsphere of the Midlothian/Chesterfield area. I'm currently bulding another house in the Midlothain area and my children will be going to Grange Hall Elementary, Tomahawk Creek Middle & Cosby HS. I have a daughter in another Manchester High School and another daughter in Bailey Bridge Middle School and both are great schools. Like the quote above Midlothian, Clover Hill, Monocan, James River are all great HS. If and when you move down you will have a nice selection of schools to choose from. It will come down to where you want to build or buy your home.

Henrico is truly nice and I've got friends who live in Twin Hickory & Wyndam. The school are ranked high, but truly a little too busy for me. You do have Short Pump close by, but this is a busier part of the Richmond area. Chesterfield is growing and has been for the past 20 years, but it still has the quite places and farm land to ride by. Good Luck.

Default consider Hanover

While you're considering outlying counties like Henrico and Chesterfield, don't forget about Hanover Co. It's an easy drive from two of the best school systems in the area (Atlee HS/Chickahominy MS or Hanover HS/Oak Knoll MS) straight down I-95. There are two very nice neighborhoods in the Hanover HS district that you might want to Google, Mount Hermon Farms (1+ ac. lots starting in $700s) and Woodside Estates (.5 ac. lots starting in 500s). Already established neighborhoods in this area that are nice are Atlee Lake Estates, Milestone, King's Charter, Cool Spring Forest, Pearson's Corner, and Chickahominy Oaks just to name a few.

There is an especially helpful website where you could see all Richmond area listings and search by school or subdiv, but the last time I posted a link to it I got a "warning" about advertising. Oh well...
