Another Bay Area Californian thinking of making the move out there. Some of you really don't paint a nice picture, though it seems as though the concensus is that the suburbs are mostly fine especially on the west side of Richmond. Is that right?

Western Henrico is very suburban with good shopping and great public schools if that's your cup of tea. It's very family friendly.

I'm so terribly sorry. I forgot to spell check my post. It's opinion. Happy?

Honestly, what did I do to you?

Let's see what I said:
1. "Richmond is boring" I'm sure most people would agree when compared to San Fran. (especially my generation, hence my opinion).

2. "Richmond is spread out" This is not opinion; this is a fact. SF is way more dense than Richmond, and most other Southern cities.

3. "Richmond is super conservative" Well this is a POV. With the general consensus being that San Fran. is the most liberal city in America, Richmond, which many (including yours truly) would already consider conservative, would seem even more so.

4. "Oakland's high crime" It may not be as bad as Oakland, but it's still higher. Look at the FBI crime statistics.

Now how any of that offended you is mystifying. I have nothing against Richmond, apart from the fact I would never live there. I even know a few people that used to live their who said it wasn't half bad. Don't know what the attitude is for. And please don't bring up this "superiority" stereotype bs. It's no wonder words like "ignorant" and "rednecks" are often used to describe Southerners.

Wow, look who's talking.

None of this offends me. This was your "opinon", as you put it(what kind of all-knowing, enlightened Northeasterner would need to run a spell-check anyway? Especially when this ignorant redneck doesn't have to.). All one has to do is take a look at your posts, and see how you really feel about Virginia and the South as a whole. Once again, it's your "opinon", but there is a strong bias in it, with some blatant misconceptions and childish name calling thrown in as well. Want me to quote you? You can come up with all the statistics and such about how superior wannabe-Northeast Maryland and the gang supposedly is, and most people still would care less. Obviously, those factors aren't the be-all end-all on what makes most content with their lives, with the exception of those who get off to how "superior" they are to others. So pretentious, hypocritical and over compensatory basically sums you and others who think similarly? Why am I not surprised?

I don't know why Marylanders self-loathe their Southern heritage or what not, but that's neither here nor there. You're gonna have to do a better job of lobbying to get Maryland to be truly included into the Northeast. A strong argument could be made against it. I'd recommend deleting the first 300 years of its history. Good luck.

You're certainly entitled to your opinions, but they invariably reflect a deep animosity toward Virginia and, more generally, "the South" that leads to predictable criticisms of the Commonwealth, its towns and cities and its residents.

How this is supposed to help someone strongly considering a move from SF to Richmond is beyond me - particularly when the OP already stated that he was looking for a change from SF.

Stereotyping Richmond as conservative and backwards in all respects is ridiculous. The business community in Richmond and the old-guard "First Families of Virginia" - yes, they are generally (but not always) pretty conservative. But there are many other communities in Richmond - a large African American community and a substantial college/university community (e.g, University of Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth, PSCE, Union Theological Seminary, etc.) Richmond reflects all of those diverse communities. I don't stereotype Baltimore based on an assumption that the entire city resembles either the crumbling, decrepit rowhouses of West Baltimore or the monied Gilman/Calvert Hall/Roland Park crowd. Is it too much for you to return the favor?

The irony - as Keyser points out - is that Maryland itself has a largely Southern legacy. The Eastern Shore and southern Maryland far more resemble the deep South than anything you'll find in either Richmond or Northern Virginia. The PG schools were segregated by law for many years, and very few of the PG nor Montgomery County schools of today have anywhere near the degree of racial and ethnic balance that you'll find in the majority of the NoVa schools. If Marylanders really want to hold themselves out as San Francisco progressives, in order to show how well they match up against those backward Southerners in Virginia, they have an awful lot of work to do first.

First off, what the hell does anything I, or anyone else, said on this thread have to do with Maryland being in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, or South? The debate in which most residents (including me, as you obviously know since you couldn't help yourself from spending all day reading every single one of my posts) and persons from the North consider MD to be part of the NE, is hardly an issue.

I don't loathe the South. I just loathe ignorant Southern pricks like yourself who think the NE is full of immoral, overly-educated, tax-loving, immagrant-loving, homosexual, Socialists who steal people's money all day for their living.

"Childish name calling?"

"typical Montgomery County snob"
"all-knowing, enlightened Northeasterner "
and the "this idiot can't even spell attitude"

Now who's the hypocrite?

btw a "snob" would be one of the large number Northern Virginian would of feel insulted if you called NoVa "Southern." Many go out of their way to call it Northern Virginia. Now there's elitism at it's best. If somebody asks I'm from Maryland, not Central Maryland.

You are still the hypocrite. Among other things you still resort to childish name calling and blatant stereotyping without knowing anything about me. I'll tell you this much -- I'm not even from Virginia!! But I know enough that you're a glorified Maryland/Northeast cheerleader, and therefore a joke.

How was I calling you names when what I said you have verified to be true? You may not like it, but just taking a look at your recent posts in the Maryland forum(which I visit -- the horror!!) and remembering your other denigrating posts about VA and the South, and it contradicts that holier-than-thou, can-do-no-wrong beacon of light you try to shed here.

But congratulations. Maryland is heaven on earth. You get a sticker, along with the prestigious "I don't give a ****" award.

"I'm not even from Virginia"

Excellent, and your attitude is "I'm right and the stupid Northerner has no credibility." What are you even doing here???

Doesn't matter where you're from You're the idiot repeating the stereotypes, not me. Maybe you should point out one of my stereotypes and prove me wrong. Where is this "Maryland is heaven" garbage coming from anyway? The only thing I've done on other boards is shed some positive light on my state and that area of the country, in response to inquiries, or in defense of it when others say things that aren't true. What do you want me to say? The Northeast sucks and the South is prosperous and problem-free?

Anyway I'm finished with this pointless back and forth. Respond if you want; I couldn't care less. You're just an arrogant idiot with too much time on his hands "patrolling" the boards for opinions you disagree with and baselessly attacking the poster. Oh yeah, and spell checking posts...I don't why this site even lets in trolls like you. Maybe you should get a few pointers from JEB whose posts have at least a modicum of rationality. Loser.
