My mother and her husband are coming next week for a surprise 70th birthday trip for my mother. Part of the surprise is that her siblings(70ish), children and a couple grandchildren will also be coming. All the seniors are healthy and physically fit.

None of them have been to Richmond before(they live in NY state) and I was wondering what would be the best things to see and do. She will be here for 3 full days to sight-see.

We are new to the area and the only things I came up with were the house at Maymount and Lewis Ginter Gardens. We may consider doing a segway tour of richmond if the weather is good.

So...we need rainy/cold weather activities and warm weather activities with this crazy weather. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Default Monticello

It's probably an hour to an hour and a half drive (not sure if you're interested in a road trip) but it's quite a neat place to visit if they haven't been before.

Though construction on its major expansion is ongoing, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts might be a good option - VMFA: Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

The State Capitol was recently restored and is very impressive. Virginiacapitol.gov -- About the Capitol

A trip over to Belle Isle/Brown's Island/Canal Walk and the Tredegar Civil War Visitors Center and American Civil War Center might be worth it. There's a exhibit on Brown's Island called the April 1865 Bridge which is worth checking out (even if you could care less about the Civil War).

5:00 on Fridays at Capital Ale House downtown is the Afterwork Blues and Brews... free blues at the Music Hall and a huuuge beer menu.
