Think I have to move to Richmond
Hello Everyone,
I am moving to Richmond from the Virgin Islands and to be totally honest, I am very nervous.... no let me say horrified. Actually I will be working in Henrico County. I grew up in Norfolk (Tidewater area). Shortly after college in Petersburg I moved to DC. I have been living in STX for the past 5 years. Living in the VI has given me so much exposure to various cultures that do not think I will find in the Richmond area. What I would like to know is what will I find there relating to cultural activities, theater, night life, and attitudes. I'm hoping to discover more than I expect. I am hoping to be pleasantly surprised. I am already wise enough not to compare Richmond and the surrounding areas to the Virgin Islands. I hope to be able to apreciate it for what it has to offer.
Thank for in advance for any feedback.

If you want "diversity" you're gonna have to get in your car and drive to Carrytown or Shockoe Bottom for some event or maybe around VCU. I doubt anything in Richmond is going to surprise you once you've left the Virgin Islands..lol but for what it's worth Henrico is a pretty good place to work in. Depending on how close to the airport you are you might find a area with some diversity, like around the Varina border area. That's about it for Richmond..

Judging from the comments. Richmond seems to bea place that you have to look at with a very open mind. I will research some of the places you shared with me and go on from there. Appreicate your response

Melody, you'll find Richmond to have plenty of interesting social and networking opportunities. Just get out there, and you'll be fine. Also, Richmond seems to have more career opportunities than most other places as well. It's growing and dynamic city!
VCU is a huge University, and it attracts talents folks from all over the world. Plenty of diversity, I would say.
I'm older (I think), and I'm not looking for the nightlife anymore. I live in beautiful Williamsburg where I socialize mostly with folks just like me who like to play golf, wine and dine, etc. Most of my friends here are retired, so they are all having more fun than I am since I'm still working!
Ron, you mentioned Varina. Do you live there? My mom lives there. It's the "sticks", but it's so close to the city. Only about 10 minutes to the downtown! And really no traffic. Probably the easiest commute of any of the suburban areas.

Thank you.
I still appreciate a little night life from time to time but I have always been involved with the arts both here in the VI and in Washington, DC. I have a background in professional theater and am looking forward to perhaps seeing what the local theater has to offer there. I acquired an interest since in the VI in sailing so I know I will miss that. I am going to be teaching so I know that my students will keep me busy as well. Right now I would like to know about the closest areas around Highland Springs High School that are really not in the same district. Looking for easy access to Highland Springs from another community. Can you make any suggestions?

I went to Rolfe & Varina. Met people from all over in that area. Also maybe Melody this is what you are looking for?

Melody, I think you might be surprised (in a positive way) with the arts scene in Richmond.

Try Mechanicsville in Hanover County.. close to Higland Springs high (10-15min commute) and a variety of apartments, safe, and lots to do. Good Luck and let me know if you have anymore questions.. Like Maverick I also went to Rolfe & Varina and know a lot about the east end.

Thanks for the information. It helps me out a lot as I prepare for my move which will be in June. Something I had not considered is downtown Richmond and the some of the of the nearby counties close to Highland Springs.
