We left LI in 2004 due to husbands job relocation. Moved to Glen Allen(Wyndham). It was a difficult time as my daughter was just starting high school. For a short while there was crying but she made friends, joined clubs and adapted fairly quickly. She excelled at Deep Run and loved it. Also we did fly here back to visit friends and visa verse which helped.
My husband and I quickly came to love Va. His commute was 10 minutes not 2 1/2 hours 1 way into NYC. The weather was beautiful-no snow to speak of,warmer (summer can be pretty hot though),low taxes and sales tax in general lower cost of living, wonderful neighbors. Only thing we missed was our family who would come to visit and the close proximity to the ocean. Virgina beach is approx 2 1/4 hrs which we would visit during the off season and during the summer would rent a condo right on the beach in Emerald Isle,NC. More laid back and quiet.
We probably would have stayed in Va forever but Oct '08 another job relocation to the Midwest

.Our son is in Richmond-not moving. Our daughter is at East Carolina University,NC and now wants to transfer to VCU and rent an apartment as she misses Richmond.
We are telling ourselves this is only temporary and look ahead to moving back to Va.
Good Luck I am sure you will love it, the area is wonderful and the people are very welcoming.
