My husband's job has been moved to Richmond and we will be relocating there this summer. We have many questions but I will address the first one now. We will more than likely be renting for the first year until we can get a good feel for where in Richmond we would like to settle down. We are tossing around the idea of renting a loft or some sort of urban apartment in the city. We come from a fairly rural area of Kentucky and this will likely be a big change for us but we are looking forward to an exciting change of pace. We like the idea of being able to walk to restaurants, shopping, nightlife, etc. We also love the urban style of many of the apartments/lofts we have viewed online. We have no children but we do have a 20lb dog. After much research we have found several areas that seem appealing to us....The Fan, Museum District, Carytown, and Shockoe. Does anyone have any suggestions as to which area might be better for a young, professional couple with a small dog and no children? We want to be in a "safe" neighborhood preferably with other people our age (early 30's). There are some specific apartment buildings that we are looking at....The lofts at Canal Walk and The River Lofts at Tobacco Row are two that come to mind right away.....any opinions on these two? We are hoping to keep our monthly rent around $1200.00 for a two bedroom or a bit more if utilities are included. Thanks in advance!

For 1200$/mo. you could get a decent place in the Fan. I think The Fan would be the best bet. It has easy access to downtown, but the feel of a small town within the city. It is close to many many restaurants, shops, and stores. We live in the Fan just a few blocks from just about everything. Carytown is also nearby .

The only downside is parking sometimes, but there are usually spaces open during the week
That is why its ideal if you would rather ride your bike to get to places.

The Fan is very safe. I have lived here for 11 years and have never been once robbed, mugged , or murdered.

Thanks for your replies! Seems like the Fan/Carytown is the place to be. Is the Shockoe area undesirable or is the Fan just that much better? We will be in Richmond next weekend for a mini visit to scout out some of these areas. We'll be staying at the Berkeley. Is this hotel near any of these areas. It appears to be very near Shockoe but not so near the Fan...right?

I dont think its a matter of being undesireable at all.....the fan has a very urban residential feel.....where as the bottom, Shockoe, is more industrial / warehouse in feel. The Berkely is closer to Shiockoe but not far from fan..... Ive sent you a direct message.

The Berkeley is right in Shockoe.

The Fan is about 2 mi west from Downtown area/Shockoe Slip.

But the Fan would give a much more "small town" feeling within the city. Close to everything as well.
