Default Fan District Questions

I'm considering moving to Richmond, the fan especially.

How safe is the fan?
Are there parts of the fan that are less safe than others?
How car North or South can you go before it gets "less safe"?

I have never lived in a city but do like this area.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Its depends on what you consider safe.

I, for one, feel very safe in the fan, while others may have another opinion.

Its not one of those "leave-your-doors-unlocked" type of neighborhoods, of course, but I wouldn't particularly encourage that in any neighborhood.

Im not sure on numbers, but I think the biggest concern one would have (as far as criminal behavior) would be petty theft (particularly from inside your car).

Im not sure about North vs South (because im not that good with directions and I don't feel like pulling up a map)..but I think the further you get from Broad Street, the safer it tends to be....

Of course, though I consider it a relatively safe neighborhood, I think the key to ensuring safety is a bit of preventative common since. I would not particularly encourage walking around the Fan at 2am, though I have done just that with no problem.

The fan area is populated by a variety of different kinds of people. Many of them are VCU students, which will become more dense as you get closer to Harrison Street. Along Monument you will find some very nice houses, many worth well over a million dollars. There are also young professionals, crackheads, drug dealers, low income families and just about everything you can imagine. It is still considered the city and there is crime like any other city. You can check Richmond Police.com to see all of the crime that has taken place. Typically, the closer to Broad St. you are, the more crime.

What about the closer to 195 you get in the Fan? How is it along Cary Street?

I will say only this....as a Richmond Police officer there are alot of petty theft from vehicles and believe it or not alot of Robberies happen in the fan that many residents dont know about...The thugs usually concentrate on the VCU students...other than that it is one of the safest places in the city limits to live...and it is beautiful...Im just stating the facts..not meaning to scare you...

BTW dont go to Randolph which is the housing area south of 195....lots of crime, gangs, and thugs

Do you know anything about this...

There is a group of black juveniles that go into the fan area and assault people every once in a while. One was at the corner of Broad and Allison next to the Cabo's Restaurant. Another one was up near N. Thompson street. They usually take place after dark and they always run away. Any idea what I am talking about?

Yes...the "leader" of this kiddie wanna be gang was arrested on multiple charges and in Juvenile lockdown. You are right they beat up alot of people in the fan and Byrd park..for no apparent reason other than the victims were all white..The other were more follows to him so to speak and have been quite thus far..lets hope it stays that way for the saftey of the fan residents and park visitors.

We tried for a while to get charged on this group but no one could identify the suspects. Luckily an officer caught them in the act.
