Default 15 Year Old Girl Struck Down by Car When Walking to School Bus Stop

Hello all,
On April 7, 2009 at 6:15 am a 15 year old girl was struck down by a motorist on the way to her school bus stop. Who was this girl? My daughter, she had just left our home in Lake Landor, Caroline County. She was walking to her bus stop as she had done every morning, when all of the sudden she was struck down by a vehicle from behind. My daughter was walking along the right side of Glen Clove along the grass/ditch line. She was apparently struck and thrown into the ditch by the vehicle. The driver did stop along with another motorist. (no witness to actual accident as my daughter was knocked unconscious) Our home was called by the driver after being instructed to call 911 and we were notified what happened. When we arrived about 2-3 min later, my daughter was hysterical, shaken, bleeding and bruised! The driver said "I just didnt see her" the other motorist who had stopped was trying to calm my daughter.

An ambulance had been called as well as the police..

The person who struck my daughter just paced back and forth stating, "Im so sorry"... Changing her story 3 times as to what happened.

When the police arrived 20 minutes later, county police questioned my daughter, and she had no recollection of what actually happened... She said "I was just walking along, and the next thing I was in the ditch" "I dont remember what happened"

The ambulance arrived 20 mins (same time the police arrived) after they were called. They (EMT's) questioned my daughter as well. The state trooper on the scene failed to question myself or my daughter. While emt's looked at her head, stated the bleeding had stopped and wanted to knowif wewanted to have her be taken by ambulance, or if WE wanted to take her. Stating there would not be any difference in the amount of time it would take for her to be seen by dr's in the ER.

Along Glen Cove, there are no sidewalks, walk ways, or street lights..

The person was NOT CHARGED for hitting my daughter! My daughter was taken to Mary Washington hospital and determined to have a concussion, and required 4 staples in the back of her head.

Parents please please tell your children to be careful if they walk to their bus stop in the morning.. Drivers be aware of kids when they are walking to bus stops!!

Anyone who lives in Lake Landor Please email me as i am starting a petition to have more bus stops and street lights put in lake landor to save our kids! ravensfan4ever@gmail.com

Good luck. (Honestly) If you don't live in there, navigating those streets can be scary in the dark, since they're so narrow, and a lot of times drop off into a ditch real fast.

The street lights can be hard, because I've heard that they can cost $8,000 each. You might be able to find a contractor to go lower, but even so, the HOA would have to pay for the electric to power them, and the maintenance of replacing light bulbs and electrical problems when they go out. It was posted somewhere that your daughter had to walk 1 mile down that road to get to the school bus, which means that just to light that one road with lights every 100 feet, you're looking at having to install around 50 street lights, and even if you get a quote of $5k per light, it would cost a quarter of a million dollars just to light that one street. I wouldn't be surprised if the quote for the whole community (both sides) came out to over $3 million.

This is why I say good luck... because I'm sure people will sign a petition to 'save the kids', but ask them to part with all that money during this resession... THAT will be the hard part.

What about seeing if the HOA would make each home in there instal a small light at the end of each driveway? The light could be hooked up to people's home electric, and could light the start of their driveway, as well as the road. If every home has to do it, you could probably get a cheap quote to install them, and it would light up most of the roads. Then, the HOA could go back and install extra where more lighting is needed...

That is what I was imagining for size. This picture is actually a solar powered street light, which would save a lot of money on electric and running power down the streets... but still might be more expencive.

Anyways, there's my 2cents. I hope your daughter gets well soon.
