Default Looking for non-ocean water route: NY to Richmond

I'm trying to find a non-ocean route for a 23' sailboat to go from NY Harbour to Richmond VA without having to take an open-ocean route (although I dont mind a little brine in my water).

In truth, the journey actually starts in Montreal Canada, coming down from Sorel through the Hudson River.

While I can easily get to the NY Harbor, and from there, I can almost make it to Trenton NJ (through the Raritan River), I cant seem to get all the way to Trenton and (eventually) the Delaware River - where I can then go past Philly, through the canal and into the Chesapeake Bay down (eventually) to Richmond.

Short of a land-hump through Trenton, does anyone know of anything I may have missed?

There is a Raritan canal, but it looks to now be a national park and closed to navigation.

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Man, it looks like you might have to head out to sea...

You might need to post in the NJ forum, to see if they know anything more.

Good luck!

Yup... I think I am hosed. I'm probably going to need to weigh the risks/advantages of a short land-haul vs. a much longer (but probably less expensive) coastal sea run.

Being a bit of a novice, I question the wisdom of doing this... I guess it depends on how friendly the currents and water is around those parts.

I figure its a 3-4 day run before I can hit some inter-coastal waterways again... and there are lots of clubs and harbors along the way I can duck, run or just rest in between legs.

Its not as if I haven't been in the ocean before... and in a Boston Whaler of all things... but I'd like to err on the side of caution whenever I can.

Well, at least the land haul from New Brunswick to Trenton seems to only be about 40 miles... I'd definately price this option out, and then factor in the saved time/fuel as well as decreased risk.

Why do I feel like this is Oregon Trail, and you need to choose to take the ferry, ford the river, or float accross? haha

Again, good luck!
