In 2004 we were relocated to Richmond. We came from a rural area area in LI/NY on an acre. We were looking to replicate the same scenario in Va but after all was said and done we moved to a planned community in Glen Allen/Henrico county and it wound up being the best choice. We had one child who was starting high school. We were in Deep Run School district-our daughter adjusted very quickly and excelled.
We were so close to everything-movies-shopping etc, when it came time for her to drive we didn't have to worry about her driving the curvy country roads.
All I am saying is that rural is good but think about your family situation-we all can acclimate to any situation. I know we did and never would regret to live in suburbia with close neighbors.

Thanks for your info. Someone just also suggested Glen Allen/Henrico area going to Deep Run High School. I will look into that area. I am glad to hear that your move was a good one all around. That is also what I am looking for. I do wish for my family that we to will be able to ease into the move with no problem. More so for my children. Would you tell me what area to look into in Glen Allen? Maybe you know of some communities. Thanks so much.

we just moved ( one month ago) to glen allen from long island, in long island we had a home on 2 acres and living here we are on half an acre. although it is not as much space, the area is great. my kids ( one in high school ) love the easy access to all and the schools are academically excellent. we have no regrets, I think you will be happy. the people are soo nice.

I am really happy to hear the possitive news and that your move went well. I am actually online now looking at some of the homes in this area. I see that Glen Allen has 3 zip codes. Would you recommend one over the other? Thank you

Thanks for the information. Sorry to hear about the shooting, but glad it did not happen at the school. To bad it had to happen at all!

If schools are critical then this might provide some insight: Official Site of the Governor of Virginia

This was an informative thread for me as well. I am soon going to be stationed in Fort Lee, VA, but a friend of mine who was stationed there told me Petersburg was horrendous. I am also going to be retiring from the military in a couple of years so I was considering commuting from Richmond to Fort Lee then seek employment in Richmond after I retire from the military.

Pali - If you are going to list the one and only death by shooting in approx. 10 years in Powhatan, Please also state that the person was caught within days. The only thing this had to do with HS was their AGES and not the schools themselves. Also if you are going to compare it to another county, then you should have also listed that there were four (in 2008 alone) in Henrico of which three are still unsolved as of today. But since I listed a 10 (98-08 per State Police Site) year mark, then the averages are 0.0 for Powhatan, 5.3 for Henrico and 3.2 for Chesterfield.

I don't think there is necessarily one zip that's any better than another, but you will probably have to think more in the high 200's (at least) for a home in the Deep Run district. The lowest priced home in that district right now is $279,950.
