To address the two that said something about the shooting, if you reread my post, I never said it was done at the school. I said it was a shooting of a Powhatan student. I'm not telling her NOT to go there because of that. And yes, they were caught within days. Just I do have friends that attend Powhatan High School or still live in that area and instead of everybody "uniting" after the student's death, there has been an increase of fighting.

It was sad to hear and kinda of shocking about the recent shooting in Powhatan, this opened my eyes a little. I will be the first to say, "never say never", but this has never happened in any of the schools that my children have attended. You very rarely even hear about fights in the school. From your knowledge, do you know if the schools down there have alot of trouble including the good schools such as Deep Run or Midlothian? Don't get me wrong, I know every state has area's in it that are good and bad. I will check the Glen Allen area out as well when I am looking at the homes online and even give Midlothian a glance. Thanks again.
I don't know what sports in particular your kids are involved in but Deep Run is pretty good all around in sports and in academics. About the shooting (as I addressed in the post before this), please be clear that it wasn't done at the school, just involving their students but the fighting has increased between students whether in or out of Powhatan High lately. As for "trouble", I haven't heard anything about Deep Run or Midlothian High having much trouble, if at all. I came from a high school in TN where there were 18 fights in a span of 3 days. From my sophomore year to my senior year at Midlothian, I saw one fight. The academics are VERY well known around this area from Midlothian (their strong point) however the athletics are poor (except for girl's tennis and the cross country teams). Both Glen Allen and Midlothian are beautiful places and I don't think you'd be dissapointed with either.

Wow. Settle down Pali. Noone accused you of saying it was at the high school. I think the OP misunderstood, so I was just clarifying. If I had kids, I would probably not send them to PHS. If I still lived here, I would go the private school route. Both Glen Allen and Midlothian are decent areas. If you want to check out Midlothian, I'd look at Midlothian High and James River High. You can find a decent house for the mid $200,000's in either district. Personally, I wouldn't go with Clover Hill or Monacan. Cosby High School is still very new, and I haven't heard much about them yet, but you would be very hard pressed to find real estate under $300K anyway.

Haha, I had a feeling that post of mine would come off defensive. Sorry. I wasn't mad, just trying to clarify (hard to do by just typing). But yeah, I agree with you. Like I said, I graduated from Midlothian so I know first hand how it is academically and the area around it. James River would be my second suggestion also for your children (if you went to the Midlothian route). Monacan, I'd stay away from because they aren't as strong academically. Clover Hill has some trouble and ever since Cosby High was built a few years ago that school seems to overshadow CHHS. Besides, Cosby athletics are VERY good right now and academically pretty good, but like JH said, houses are pretty high. BUT, I'd try looking in the Woodlake area for that. For Midlothian, I'd look in Walton Park, Queensmill, and The Grove.

That is also what I am looking for. I do wish for my family that we to will be able to ease into the move with no problem. More so for my children. Would you tell me what area to look into in Glen Allen? Maybe you know of some communities. Thanks so much.
We were in 23059-Wyndham. First time driving through after coming from a rural setting in LI we said no way. But we loved it-beautiful community and all our neighbors were wonderful.

Unfortunately we have had another job relocation out to the midwest. Missing our old neighborhood but we do go back as our older kids are still there and will not move!

HelloThere2U is on a distinguished road
I lived in Richmond for a long time, specifically the Midlothian area. I have relatives who live in Powhatan County also, so I am very familiar with it.

Powhatan County does not have the same feel as Henrico or Chesterfield. Henrico and Chesterfield are both large suburban counties of Richmond with many differences within each county unilaterally. There has been a lot of growth in Powhatan County, particulary the past decade. To me, it definitely has a more of a rural feel. There are some lovely neighborhoods and you can get a house on a 2 -10 acre lot. I think there are some subdivisions there with acres lots, but I believe due to the growth out there, Powhatan changed the requirement a while back to a minimum of a 2 acre lot. I have several neices and nephews who attend Powhatan County schools at the middle, junior high, and high school level. They have a different configuration for the schools in Powhatan - two elementary (K-4) one middle school (4-6) one junior high (7-8) and one high school (9-12); so a little different. The high school is large and modern - being the only one in the county. My relatives and their children have been very happy with the schools. Powhatan Co. is not for me, but I would send my child to the schools there - the schools have come up tremendously the past decade or so. If I chose to live in Powhatan, I personally would live off of Robious Road (changes from Chesterfield to Powhatan along this corridor) because you have access to Route 288 at the county line. Route 288 is a fairly new highway in the Richmond area which runs in Chesterfield all the way to the southern part of that County near the Chester area to the western part of Henrico County at or near the Goochland County line. My second choice would be to live in one of the Powhatan neighborhoods not too far into Powhatan along the Route 60 corridor. Route 60 runs west from the Midlothian area of Chesterfield on in to and through Powhatan. Straddling the Chesterfield/Powhatan line is Route 288 again (a major highway) and quite a lot of new development to include commercial businesses, a large new Regal theatre (16 I believe), Watkins Centre - a large new shopping venue (just underway), a brand new Target, and various strip centres with a plethora of offerings.

As far as evaluating the schools and looking at numbers, keep in mind Powhatan Co. only has one high school and both Chesterfield and Henrico each have many, maybe even a dozen. So there are schools within each of these counties which may pull down the overall statistics. You have to look at individual schools. Henrico Co. schools to consider, in my opinion, would be Deep Run or Godwin (both in the far west end); others are good as well. Chesterfield Co. schools to consider would be Midlothian and James River (both in the Midlothian area).

I'm a fan of either the Midlothian area of Chesterfield or the Glen Allen area of Henrico. What is nice about either of these areas is that Route 288 mentioned previously connects both of these areas within 10 minutes. Keep in mind these areas are very "suburban" and do not have the same feel as Powhatan. Just depends on what you are looking for Good Luck! Sorry for the ramble.
