OK, I need a little bit of help finding my girlfriend a job. She is finishing up her last class for her BSN at West Virginia University. I believe she had a 3.4 gpa. She plans on leaving the woods of West Virginia and moving in with me out here in Richmond on August 5 (i've been here since Oct, so I'm already set for now). Anyways, does anybody out there know how she can get into one of the hospitals around here. She has applied online, but not has much success. She received one call while she was in school and the lady left her phone number, but now her voice mailbox is full and she cannot get through to her. Helpful feedback only, thank You.

The Richmond are is BONE DRY when it comes to the medical field. The Medical College of Virginia was on a hiring freeze earlier this year, might still be. Most other places require x amount of experience. It is VERY hard to get into a hospital. She will have a better chance at a nursing home at best. That is just the way things are here.

Yeah, I would try either a nursing home or private in-home nursing. Private nurses get paid quite a bit more than nursing homes but it may be hard to find work. With the economy as is, even the more wealthy (the people who generally hire private nurses) can hardly afford to hire a private nurse for their loved one.

Yeah there is nothing wrong with a nursing home btw. As the baby boomers get older they are going to need nurses in the home. I hope I get a well qualified nurse when I am unable to take care of my self.

Many of the area hospitals have just hired spring new grads. Indeed, it has been a rough year for the hospital/medical field in the Richmond market. The VA hospital and Long Term Care facilities seem to be the only agencies hiring. Alternatively, if she can get in on a hospital as a Per Diem staff nurse to supplement the unit, the unit director will push her through to full time when the market opens up, if she is a good fit for the unit and the director knows she is seeking full time employment. Good Luck.

It's not just Richmond, the nursing job market is tough all over now, especially for new grads. Tell her not to waste time with online applications. Go directly into the hospital HR departments and ask to speak to the nurse recruiter. A face to face meeting makes a lasting impression, even if it's not an interview. Recruiters get dozens of resumes and applications every day....they'll remember a face more than a piece of paper. I'm not in the Richmond area anymore but I worked at St. Francis about a year ago and they seemed to always need help. Check them out.

She should really try CareerBuilder. I have had lots of success with it. They have features such as applying for several jobs with just one click if you have a resume. It does take a lot of calling and emails to get through now days for ANY job. I was turned down three times before this lady decided to put me on a waiting list alone for a job.

It appears as if MCV *is* hiring RNs, or at least they have positions listed at this time.
