Hello ~

My partner and I are two gay white males. We are interested in buying a house.

We have found a great home in the Carver/Newtowne-West area off Leigh in Richmond. Can anyone tell us what this area is like?

This area is predominately african american, which does not bother us in the least, but we are concerned about how we'll be welcomed and we're not big fans of being the gentrification magnet into the area. We want a diverse neighborhood... but we want a safe neighborhood first.

We have driven by at all hours and don't see anything too disturbing. Crime reports are regular - although there was one non-negligent homicide reported a week ago.

There's a "luxury apartment" community called Southern Stove Lofts at the Hermitage intersection... we'd be looking near there.

Any insight would be great.

Thank you.

Hello! I sent you all a direct message about your questions. In general, I see many folks moving into these areas - the location is convenient and the pricing is affordable.

That area is fine as far as safety is concerned. The only problem is that you'll likely be surrounded by a good number of VCU students depending on how far out near Boulevard you go (i.e., there may be less when you approach Boulevard). If you want something away from campus, look in Southern Barton Heights.

Following up on this post to see if the OP found a home to purchase, where he purchased, and what his thoughts are of the neighborhood. I'm due to find out about a job hiring possibility and am looking at Richmond neighborhoods for me and my partner to possibly purchase in. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
