Red face Moving from FL to Va, Help me find a nice rural friendly community?

I was born in Va (Norfolk) but otherwise have not been back. I need to get out of FL due to the extreme heat that goes on 7 mo a year.

Have been looking in a "triangle" from Farmville to lynchburg to Charlottesville, but I can only explore so much by internet, would love to hear from people IN the area.

Here's what I need,
Climate-Not many summer days much over about 86 and summer time dewpoints UNDER 70. Please understand Ive been in FL most all of my life so I think in terms of 90 degree days starting in March and ending in mid Oct, So if you say it does get hot/humid please specify does it last a week a month or is it like here in FL?? From what Ive read yall think hot is 85 degrees! To me that's a cold front!

Elevation to about 600 feet. NO MOUTAINS, dont mind seeing them in a distance tho.
A rural area that is still close and convient to things like a Walmart, Docs/hosp, feedstore etc, do not want to do 20 mile drives just to get to town. Like where I live now, Im rural in a small town but the big city is 20 miles away (Tampa) and Im 4 min from my town with walmart and all that.
An area with small horse and hobby farms (thats what I will be looking for but need to know what towns to look in that are in the neighborhood of 150-250k. I have no problems with neighbors who leave their Christmas lites up all year or have a car on blocks, I do have a problem with drugs, gangs, illegals and associated crime etc. Looking for QUAINT and QUIET and PRETTY in a rustic or rural way, non pretentious. I will be hopefully renting to own or just renting first. Oh and I love little auctions, be them little junk and estate type or little chicken and pig or horse sale barns.

Please anyone can you recommend ANY "map dots" in this Central to northern Central VA area that I should be looking at more closely?? Also would be great if you have any links online to any Va dedicated horse magizines or where a good place is to post want ads for lease to own farms.

Sure appreciate any help or insite on any areas! I do not have kids so I dont have to worry about schools or things like that, I am middle aged and like a slow quiet life with good folks. Thanks!!!!

Hi there, around Richmond maybe Goochland, Powhatan, or Hanover counties. Around Charlottesville you might be interested in Crozet, Scottsville. In Greene county just north you have Standardsville and Ruckersville. Just to the south you have Lovingston in Nelson county. And in the east there is Palmyra in Fluvanna county. Other areas that might be of interest are Madison, Bedford, Amherst, Rappahannock, Louisa or Bedford. Many others as well. If you are not specifically interested in the Richmond area I would post on the general VA forum. Good luck with your search! Obviously some of my suggestions are not in the Richmond area.

By way of clarification for HatesFlorida... It's "Stenardsville."

Nebat, I wanted to clarify this, only because it's a good suggestion, and I didn't want the misnomer to throw off the search!

Charlottesville might be a little hilly for you, but it's a fantastic place. Rural areas, and close to good amenities. Nice city to visit, too, when you're in the mood for "city" in that area.

I would stay away from Lynchburg - higher elevations, and terrible medical care!

Appomattox is nice, and is about an hour's drive from Richmond. You might also be interested in Amelia County area, which is between Appomattox & Richmond.

If you end up looking in the Richmond area, Goochland might be good, but I've heard that their land rates are elevated. Powhatan might be a better choice.

Here's a link to some horse farms for sale around the Charlottesville area. I don't know whether they are anything that you would be interested in, but it might give you a feel for the surrounding area: Charlottesville, Virginia Farms For Sale

Also... summers in Central VA don't last quite as long as FL, but close. We get lots of humidity, and unlike Norfolk, we don't have the ocean breeze to cool things off. I don't know where you are in FL, but we rank equal to Miami area on this little chart: Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitors sites is not allowed

Good luck in your search!

Hey I really REALLY appreciate all these places to look! THANK YOU. Now my other big question...I see you said it was humid. I dont believe ANY PLACE can be as humid as here, unless you went to South FL. Im curious, is there ANY PLACE where I can find a record of VA dewpoints for the summer months. Here from about April to Nov dewpoints are easily 70 (ungodly humid) to 77 (feel like trying to move and breath in warm jello) Everything Ive read says that VA may have some bad days but isnt like this day after day after day. And the highs in the summer only average around 86 (tho I understand you may have a hot week or 2 with above 90) tell me about them weather PLEASE!!!! TY!!!!
