What is Ukrops?
Is it a chain supermarket like a Safeway or Albertons...as in lots of basic boring grocery stores?

Regarding Ukrop's... I'd have to say that they are different from a plain boring supermarket. Here's a link to their website:
Ukrop's
Ukrop's is a regional chain of about 28 or 29 stores which are mostly in the Richmond area and is a huge part of the local community. The stores are also a unique experience, particularly the larger ones. Some are better than others...the one closest to where we live has the following above the typical grocery aisles, deli, meat dept, eetc :
-Full service floral dept.
-2-story cafe with a community "celebration room" available for free for events up to 100+ people.
-Starbucks
-Chef's Specialties - choose from a variety of freshly created dishes made by the in-store chef
-cheese shop and olive bar
-Kitchen and Grill serving up all kinds of made to order food, plus pizza, paninis, chicken, soup bar, etc... (all of it is delicious!)
-Salad Bar
-Fresh Sushi
-Natural and Organic dept.
-Pharmacy
-Dry Cleaning
-Photo processing
-Alteration shop
-instead of waiting in line at the deli, you can order at the deli kiosk and pick it up within 10 minutes
-Great stuff in the bakery
Also, they take your groceries out to the car for you free of charge (you actually can't tip the baggers, it's part of the experience).
Only drawbacks for some:
1. closed on Sundays
2. don't sell alcohol
It's a family owned company that holds a lot of traditions the founders started.
Here's a link to a pdf worth reading if you want to learn more about Ukrop's:

Any of you know the Private Stock Cigar and Wine stores?
When others rag on Richmond and say it's "dirty" etc., is it really? Or are they just people that perceive negativity in things anywhere? Surely some parts of town are better than others, as they are anywhere. As they are in Montana.
And does anyone know the Squire Hill Apartments on Lamplighter? How far is that from Forest Hill Ave?
I appreciate any answers to help us out. Richmondpics has already been cool and informative.

Glad I've been a help.
Most people say Powhite (Po-white) but some people do pronounce it Pow-hite.
Richmond definitely has a southern feel to it (Vasinger would make you think it's like Gone with the Wind or something ) but it won't feel as southern as Alabama for sure. Lots of people have moved into the Richmond area from points north so it's lost some of that southern feel (for better and worse).
Private Stock... haven't been but I've heard good things about it. Also, while it isn't a local store, Total Wine has a vast selection of wines and a lot of great regional, microbrewery, and import beers. Private Stock has 3 or 4 locations around town.
Squire Hill... ehhh to be honest, that isn't the best part of town. Older, more working class suburbs in Chesterfield. Definitely not the worst part of town by any means, but I personally would prefer other areas. Check it out for yourself though. From there... Forest Hill Avenue is maybe 10-15 minutes if you were to take Belmont to Chippenham Pkwy North. There's a Forest Hill Ave exit maybe 5-7 miles away.
Best wishes!

No part of the South is like Gone With The Wind anymore. Having been to the deeper South- they are losing their Southerness too. And 50 years ago when my parents grew up here- my list wasn't all that far off !

Your very Richmond if.....
You're very Richmond if...
You still refer to the Diamond as Parker Field
You think the Virginia Museum is comparable w/ the Louvre
Your idea of a nutritious lunch is a soggy sliced pork sandwich w/ cheese and slaw from Bill's
You still think Regency Square is THE mall
You think the Massey and Valentine families were the founding fathers of our nation
You believe that Saad El Amein was one of the great legal minds of our time and totally misunderstood
You know Paul Sadler
You still find yourself, from time to time, blurting out CHICO RUIIIIIIIIIZ in the shower

A little more:
-You enjoy visiting New York City and other foreign countries
-Your church has a Pastor that ran off with the collection plate
-You know that people from First Baptist church are really wannabee Episcopalians
-You look down on people who live in Wyndham
-You think Short Pump Town Center is "tacky" but shop there anyway
-You enjoy watching Gene Cox Butcher the 6' o'clock news

There are Richmonders who say "Po-white"? Track those people down and give them a good tongue-lashing. It is now and has always been "POW-hite".
TONGUE IN CHEEK ALERT: As a native with area roots that predate the founding of the city, allow me to tell you about one aspect of Richmond. Yes, we do spend an inordinate amount of time remembering the past. When I was a child the chief pastime among the blue-haired lady set was to sit around discussing just who was related to whom. It didn't matter if a person had money--what mattered was that they had ANCESTORS. Someone once quipped that Henry VIII was born in Richmond . . . but it was Richmond, England; he didn't have sufficient ancestors to be born in Richmond, Virginia. In Richmond, it is, in fact, preferable to be blue-blooded but powah ("poor") . . . IF that poverty is the direct result of losing the family fortune in the "wawah". You then are truly Richmond royalty. Yankees may call the events of 1861-65 the "Civil War" but locally it's the "Wawah of Nawthun Aggression" . . . except among those same blue-haired lovelies who are much too ladylike to utter such a crude word as "war". The proper phrase is "the recent unpleasantness" as in "let's go to Hollywood Cemetery and put flowers on the graves of the glorious daid of the recent unpleasantness." END OF TONGUE IN CHEEK
Actually, while old-line Richmonders (of all races) do celebrate their family histories, today's citizens are firmly focused on the future and it shows all over the city. Believe it or not, Richmond natives do have a sense of humor about their little eccentricities. It's those eccentricities, combined with a vibrant, interesting and diverse city, that make Richmond special and unique. Problems exist to be sure, as they do in every city I've ever been in. But Richmonders are justifiably proud of their home.
So y'all come see us, ya heah. We'll take you down the Powhite Parkway to the local Ukrops and treat you to some real suthun cooking.

You know... I left the office to run an errand this morning while walking down Main Street I was amazed to see an old lady dressed in fancy clothes and wearing her white shopping gloves. I'm too young to have seen all the old Richmond ladies wandering Broad Street with their white gloves on shopping trips to Miller and Rhoads and Thalhimer's, but I've heard all about it so it was a neat surprise to see it today.

Why does everyone try to make Richmond seem soooooooo southern? Like we sit on the porch swatting flies and waving to the passersby. Totally not the case. Its that clinging to the "OLD" that holds Richmond back! Alot of people love the old way Richmond was, though at this point none of you were around to actually witness the "OLD" Richmond! Let go of that ridiculos war garbage and step into 2007! This is not Alabama people! This is the bottom of the North and the top of the South! Who the hell says "Yankee"? Come on! To me Richmond more identifies with the "Mid Atlantic" as opposed to the "SOUTH". Letting go of that civil war south crap will help to give Richmond an IDENTITY! Take a look at a map and notice how HUGE the south is! It extends from Va all the way to the friggin west coast where Texas boarders! Va gets lost in this enormous region because there are scores of other states in it that are TRULY southern! Richmond and VA arent southern enough to pull off the whole southern thing. Its MIDATLANTIC! Promote that! Geez, the mid atlantic reigon only has like 4 states plus DC in it! Va could stand out and shine in that small company of states instead of competing with southern heavyweights such as Georgia, Florida and Texas, plus like 13 other states for the spotlight.

Don't forget a city Council woman who could fill several editions of the Star or Enquirer.
