Seriously, self-defense classes? CWP? It's Glen Allen, pretty much the archetypal white-bread suburb. They're not moving to Church Hill-and even that's not half as bad as it used to be. Still not very good, though.

Coming from NoCal, though, I imagine Richmond will be a bit of a culture shock. Very, very different place. It's not as much of a Southern city as it was a few decades ago, but compared to where you're from it'll seem like rebel flag heaven. Still, since you're moving to the far West End, that's an area with a lot of transplants. If your kids like history, Richmond is Civil War central. Lots of battlefields, the Museum of the Confederacy, the White House, etc. Really, pretty much anything you'll find on Richmond or VA in generally is going to be aimed more at the past than the present.

Welcome! I must say, I think (hope!) the above was merely tongue-in-cheek humor, as I did chuckle a bit when first reading your post. The thought, "It's Virginia, not Siberia" *may* have crossed my mind.

As for books, Colonial Williamsburg's bookstore has a ton of books for children geared toward history. Try the Williamsburg Marketplace (Colonial Williamsburg's official online shopping venue).

Richmond Rocks! looks like it could be cute.

They may run screaming, but American Girl's Felicity was from colonial Virginia. You may be able to pull off the movie with them.

You'll probably want to wait until they're a bit older, but Virginia has numerous ghost legends that are exciting for the tween set.

You may also want to put the Richmond Kids' Expo on your calendar, since you'll be here by then. You could probably find more info there re: things to do with the kids, shopping, services, etc.

Good luck and again, welcome!
