Smile Looking to relocate to within and hour of DC or Richmond

Reposting with more descriptive title ;-)

Hello Everyone. We will be moving to Virgina from Hawaii. We need to be within about an hour of DC or Richmond. Hampton looks nice and would work though it would be pushing it distancewise. Were looking for a small town feel and boating attmosphere which is why we are attracted to Hampton. We can afford about 400k. Ideally a place with a downtown we could walk to dinner shopping etc. We have a 4 year old so schools are important. I work out of the house so I don't commute but being close to an airport would be a plus. We are not adverse to townhouse living. I have no desire for a large yard and 2000 sf is plenty. Any insight would be appreciated.

Aloha

Maybe Williamsburg? You wouldn't be far from the James River where boating is very popular. It would put you at right about an hour to Richmond.

absolutely James City County (JCC) which much of it has a williamsburg address (as does the City of williamsburg, parts of york county and parts of charles city county)

JCC is surrounded by water - we have great schools, wonderful people, low crime. I would look in the "upper end" which includes toano, lightfoot, anderson;s corner, the colonies (def look here- not sure if 400K works if it does great water community) stonehouse - much of it has easy river access, is closer to RIC (about 30 min, rest of JCC about 40-50 min) and is priced lower. for 400K you can have a nice home, enjoy all our waterways and outdoor recreation and quality of life. the area in general is priced high since we are so desirable - 400K is average and certainly nice.

you could also buy a townhouse in kingsmill - marina in community, true resot living

Kingsmill Resort & Spa - Stay. Play. Getaway.

why not york county? right next to hampton and newport news and close to i-64, not far from water so it would be an hour to richmond schools are great in york county. the section of hampton which is close to the water is not that desirable, not to say the whole city is bad. if you do decide hampton do the NW side.

Fredericksburg is 1 hour from both locations... and you can get a lot for $400k
Or if you want stuff within walking distance, check out my many posts about Ladysmith Village in caroline, about 30 mins from Richmond (to the north) and an hour and a half from DC

Can you tell more positives about Willamsburg. The post are a little negative, crime and tourists.

Thanks, Joe

JCC looks great thanks, do the towns you mentioned have an actual downtown with shops etc or are the just areas.

Thanks again,

Thanks for the Heads up York county, looks nice. Is there alot of crime in Hampton? A friend told me that all Navy Ships made tough pleasure boating.

Thanks, Joe

I've read your posts on Ladysmith, looks interesting, how much is actually built? All those planned schools etc must be costly.

Thanks, Joe

hampton does have crime but the crime level is equal to the national average, if you listen to some of the folks on the forum anyone would think that Hampton was Beruit. a spot you may want to look at is Michael's Woods on the Northwest side. The schools on that side of town are decent and it won't take that long to get to the water. Depends on what body of water your in. The james river (southside of Hampton) dosen't have the navy ships to worry about. The navy ships are more around the Monitor-merrimac tunnel and and Norfolk.
