I work in downtown Richmond and we are thinking of moving to the area (currently live in NoVA). Would like less than 30 minute commute. What are nice (read safe) neighborhoods both in and outside of richmond to live?

Do you have any other wants besides safety? There are tons of safe neighborhoods within 30 minutes of downtown. Help us narrow it down.

In Short Pump:
Wyndham, Twin Hickory, Grey Oaks, Wellsley
These are all large pool neighborhoods with excellent school assignments. Prices for SFH start in the mid $200s and go to around $1 million. $400k buys a nice 3000 sf house on a third of an acre (just an example for reference). These neighborhoods would all put you w/in 30 minutes of downtown. Tons of smaller neighborhoods--just depends on what you're looking for.

Well for now we are looking to rent, not buy so anything under 1400/month would be fine though if we could get it closer to 1000 I would be ecstatic, for a house not an apartment. Our son is only 5 months, so schools aren't that important. We would like a neighborhood that has decent sized yard/fenced. I prefer actual neighborhoods with trees sidewalks etc., but would live in HOA type community. Other than that, stores that are convenient and less traffic would be great. Though I think after NoVA, anywhere would seem to have less traffic.lol

I currently live in Charles Glen off of Monument and Horsepen, and it is convenient to everything on the north side of the River (10 minutes to Short Pump, 10 minutes to VCU)! Across Charles Street are several small townhouses that rent from 800-1600 depending on the size you are looking for.

We just bought a house in the Far West End, and I am already having a tiny bit of buyer's remorse over my change in commute times. Hah, if you are looking for a house to rent, we have a 4br, 2000sf place.....

I am looking to rent a house with a yard. Possibility of buying a home in the future, but plan to rent for now. I have a dog, lhasa apso, which she does not shed. she is housetrained and is a good dog. three bedroom is preferrable, but i would consider a two bedroom house. I am looking for a rural and safe area in virginia. I am coming from Pennsylvania. i plan to take a trip to virginia this weekend to see any possibilities.
