What is with Sundays in Roanoke, more specifically, Downtown?

We are from Erie, PA, the 4th largest city in PA (I'd say it's comparable in population and size to here) and we were astonished that nothing was open downtown today.

Why isn't the City Market or even shops open - it's a weekend?

We ended up back in the Cave Spring area (we live in Cedar Point) and went to Brambleton Deli for a quick bite and a beer. They did have music outside, but it is 100 degrees, so didn't quite get out there to sit and enjoy today.

If someone has suggestions on what to do in Roanoke on a Sunday, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Also, we're of the young professional variety and I am seeking a job in the Communications realm (my husband got a job in IT at Norfolk Southern) and we are looking for a good young professionals group. Is newVAconnects still around? How is the Square Society?

Thank you to anyone who can give us some feedback!

Roanoke has a lot of weekend outdoor festivals centered around Elmwood Park downtown - but this may have been a weekend with no big one scheduled.

One possible difference I have noticed (just a guess) - the places with harsher winters (I would say Erie is harsher than Roanoke ) sometimes tend to be more intentional in enjoying the outdoors during the times when it is possible.

(BTW, it does like the metro pop of Erie is indeed very similar to that of Roanoke.)

Default Sundays in Roanoke

I remember the "blue laws" in Virginia where businesses were NOT allowed to even open on Sundays. Its a Southern religious thing! With so many people flocking to market square in downtown on Saturdays now its odd to me more businesses don't open on Sundays either. Roanoke must have so many festivals going on Saturdays the folks are just too tired for much to do on Sundays I guess.
