Default Job Hunt for a Young Professional

Hello!

So as you may have read in my recent posts, we just moved here from Erie, PA because my husband got a job with Norfolk Southern.

I, however, do not have a job past Oct 15 (the day my working remotely for my job back home is done) and I am desperately seeking a job in the Communications realm (PR, Marketing, Event Planning, Advertising, Writing/Editing, Corporate Communications, etc) and am having a heck of a time finding much of anything availble in this area.

I have a BA in Communication from Denison University (small but prestigious liberal-arts school in Ohio) and have half of my MBA completed (looking to finish that here) and would really appreciate sme advice on how to tackle this particular market...

...especially after having read in multiple places that there's a major lack of jobs for young professionals, especially in the area of expertise/interest that I'm after.

I've tried to get a hold of someone in newVAconnects, but they're not very visible or accessible it seems. I also am wondering about he Square Society - is that something worth joining at least from a networking/social aspect?

Any input would be greatly appreciated because I really want to love it here, but it seems there are a lot of reasons that are not making it easy for me right now, with a major one being the potential of extended joblessness.

Thank You!
Kate

Yeah, I have applied for the one in Roanoke, but haven't gone as far as Blacksburg yet...

Thank you for the suggestions!

Salem Civic Center in Salem, VA

It said to register by 9/3 but I think that was for employers...

Welcome to Roanoke, DMBflower. It's true that your field is not one with a lot of opportunity in Roanoke right now. I've got a lot of experience in that field as well and there just isn't much work at all. That's really the case everywhere with writing/journalism these days, especially outside NY/DC. I'm working in another field now, actually. If you have any kind of entrepreneurial spirit, maybe you can create a business of your own! Roanoke has a chapter of SCORE that has seminars and offers volunteer advice and support for small business startups.

You might want to contact Stuart Mease about your "young professionals" question. I think he's at Virginia Tech these days, not Roanoke, but that's pretty much his specialty.

Check out Carilion Clinic. They're the largest private employer in the area and when I worked there, they frequently had openings for marketing professionals. They've branded themselves quite nicely and are often running media ads in print and cable.
