My biggest point to this forum post is that it is tough to be a young white collar professional in Roanoke and people thinking of relocating to this area need to be aware of it. Do IT jobs exist in Roanoke...Sure, just not for someone starting out in IT. We are finding a place in the world that allows both of us to work where we want. And the quest continues...

Sorry haven't followed up on this thread. On gov job, I should have said, I referred to fed gov IT job, giving what has happened and what is happening now, security type fed IT job are plenty especially in greater DC area where fed gov concentrates. On commercial IT space, again I'd recommend IT project management role, yes, even outsourced IT work may still need managers to take control/supervise... Otherwise, without extensive experience in some core technology area, say, programming or database management, I don't doubt the difficulty of IT job in small places. Another idea to consider is, to become an expert (user) in open source software, this industry is definitely picking up pace... (your hub's differentiation...)
My take is, know where the crowd is going but do not follow the crowd...
