Been living in Roanoke for nearly 7 years but it's been 25 years since I left NJ, and sometimes I just need a taste of quick-witted Northern humor/cynicism and directness. Are there any social groups in this area where many of its member can fit this bill?

ROSC on meetup ? There are 500+ members and a lot of them are from other places. With your username I think it's a good bet you'll find someone to connect with there.

Actually, I was a member of the Roanoke Outdoor Club Meetup for a couple of years and went on many wonderful hikes. And in fact, I may look them up again sometime soon. While there are some older folks there, most were decades younger than me and most were single (understandable). I was hoping to find some activities where I could get my husband to come along and hiking (and such) just doesn't seem to be his thing. Thanks for the suggestion though--The ROSC has been the only outlet I have found since moving here.

When we visited the Roanoke Valley Bird Club - it seemed to have a good variety of state backgrounds represented - and probably closer age match too! Fun folks.

If you venture up to Lexington, it is full of NJ transplants. The Newcomers Club is a great place to start.

That's good to know. I guess Lexington is about an hour away...Now that spring is here, I find myself delving back into the beautiful landscapes and terrain around here, and not focusing so much on society. Time to get the garden growing! I guess these mountains are the main reason I could never go back to NJ. Now wouldn't it be great to have it all!
