Hello,Coming to Roanoke for a look see and I'm figuring flying into Richmond and driving via #64 and #81 and figure about four hours. Is that the route you would take? Its seems the only four lane route and I'm not familiar with how any of the two lane roads?

no. take 60 to 460 west.... nice ride right past Lynchburg into R-noke. Drops you right into downtown.

Either route is good, but 64 to 81 won't take you 4 hours. 3 at the most.

If you are comming from Richmond airport I would take 895/Pochahontas Parkway (there is a new exit right outside the airport) all the way out to 60 west/ameila then to 460 take that straight out like another poster suggested. It is a much nicer route. I lived in Roanoke for 2 years and was from Richmond, This route is actually quicker IMHO and more of a striaght shot. It should only take 3 hours. I never took 81 unless I was on the far western side of town. 81 has LOTS of tractor trailors and its only 2 lanes and should be 4. Best of luck! Enjoy your visit

Google Maps says the 60E/460E route from the Richmond Airport to 'Roanoke, VA' (which it places downtown on Kirk Avenue between Jefferson and 1st St SW) is 171 miles, 3 hours, 17 minutes driving time. Depending on the day of week and time of day, Rt 60 from Powhite Pkwy through Midlothian can be a traffic hassle, then Rt 60/Rt 24 is only 2 lanes until you get to 460E in Appomattox.

The I64E/81S route is 196 miles, 3 hours 21 minutes driving time. Pretty boring drive on 64 and lots of trucks on 81.

Google also has an 895/360/460 route that is 170 miles, 3 hours 18 minutes, but the section of 360 from Chippenham through Courthouse Rd is no picnic either.
