5 or 6 years ago they arrested a Salem Fair employee who was a sex offender from New Hampshire that was on the run. Yeah, I know it was years ago, but taking my kids to an atmosphere like that? No thank you.

A quick search of 24153 on the sex offender registry shows 85 sex offenders. So why bring kids to Salem at all?

Another 189 in Roanoke.

And 951 in Tampa, the OP's current location.

Valid points.... Just a personal choice not to attend the Salem Fair.

Yes - lots of sex offenders among other things in Tampa. Someone told me there are more strip clubs here than McDonalds. Not sure if that is true or not - but it seems like it. As for fairs/carnivals - there is a town just south of Tampa that is lovingly referred to as "carnyville" or carnytown or something. I guess this is where the carnival workers spend the off season. Either way we prob wont visit the fair - too much of a time crunch. Will check out the Farmers Market instead (fun for me not so much for the kids).
We are looking to move out of here sooner than later - just really depends on when we can get the job transfer. I visited the Roa/Salem area last Dec and really liked it. My hubby wants to see it -thus the reason for the visit in a few weeks. We are time limited tho - so we want to pack a lot in during the day and a half that we are there.

Yes, Gibsonton, FL

I would not move to Salem or Roanoke, there are nicer places nearby with less baggage.

And definetly do not stay at the following Motels:
Knights Inn in Roanoke (on Thirlane Rd) (this is the single worst motel I have ever stayed at in my LIFE)
Quality Inn in Roanoke (on Thirlane Rd)
Ramada Inn in Roanoke (on Franklin Rd)
Howard Johnsons in Salem which I previously mentioned

Just curious as to what places you think are nicer with less "baggage"?
Every place has its issues. Roanoke just happens to be closer to our families and has 4 seasons. Plenty of great things about living in Tampa just so happens that Virginia better meets our geographic needs. We are considering Glen Allen too.

Thx for the hotel info.

What I meant, is there are nicer areas NEARBY without any of the crime, poverty, bums, panhandling, etc.

Here are some options: (listed in order of proximity to Roanoke)

Shawsville
Troutville
Natural Bridge
Fairlawn
Pearisburg

Depends on what you are looking for... even parts of Radford, Christiansburg and Blacksburg I would consider before Salem. You are less than an hour from them from any of the places I mentioned.

I like the area, and spend some time up there every year. If I could find a job up there making the same or better than I do here (adjusted for cost of living differences), I would move there.

Back to the Salem Fair, whats wrong with mingling with some sleezy teenaged
kids eating corn dogs and getting tattoos? I like the Fair and I always go year after year. I guess it reminds me of my sleezy days as a teenager myself.

Yikes...you make Roanoke sound like parts of NYC!! The "crime, poverty, bums, panhandling, etc." are a miniscule part of life in Roanoke.
Crime is low, no matter what the stats say. Remember... not paying child support is a crime too, and effects the stats. Doesn't mean that those criminals will impact your life.
Poverty. Yeah, it's there. Just like everywhere.
Bums and panhandling. I do some work with "bums" at a downtown establishment. They are actually people, with stories and feelings, etc. And I don't get panhandled. Not once that I can recall, outside of someone asking me if I had a smoke for them. I didn't. That was it.
