Default Snow in Galax?

I checked out Galax on Wikipedia, and the article says they get 30-40 inches of snow in the winter. Is that true? It looks like a pretty town, but I wouldn't want to relocate to somewhere that gets as much snow as New York.

Default Yes

Galax does get plenty of snow. The area is situated at a relatively high altitude for the east coast, at almost 3,000 feet. If Denver is at 5,000 feet, then areas at 7,500 feet will get more snow, right. The same thing applies in the Appalacians. I'd move to Galax in a hot minute, if I could find a job. But I love snow.

I like Galax and the surrounding area and am considering southwest VA as a retirement location. I looked it up on Sperling's Best Places and according to them, Galax averages 19.2 inches and the elevation is 2,393. I thought 40 inches sounded way too much. Check out city data's link below and you'll see the snowfall chart for Galax. I don't know if it's true or not, but I've been told Wikipedia is often very "off" with their information.

I am originally from that area and 30 to 40 inches does seem like a lot. But, I think that may be somewhat accurate. Of course, they aren't getting that much all at once, it is more like an inch here, 3 inches there, and soon after day break it is gone.

According to the same source (Sperlings) Roanoke gets 23.1" at an elevation of 1162' (Which seems high, I always remember the elevation to be just under 1000'.)

There must be some other factors (topographic?) Possibly Galax is in the rainshadow of the Smokeys and White Top.

30-40 inches of snow over an entire winter isnt much and as said before doesnt all fall at once the quoted number is just an average and could be higher or lower,
if any kind of snow or cold weather is going to pose a problem you might want to follow the countries huge migration to the Tampa Bay area..
