Agreed, that would be nice. Ruth's Chris would be another one. I even remember someone mentioning that Hard Rock Cafe would be a big draw if it would locate there. Doubtful that they would though, since they seem to locate only in large cities or in popular destinations, such as Gatlinburg.
I heard another rumor that the new proposed Hotel downtown will have an indoor pool and affiliated with the Hotel Roanoke, part of the chain of Hotels. Who knows if all of these rumors are accurate but I can only say it is way past time for another Hotel downtown.

I believe that the Hotel Roanoke is affiliated with Hilton, so that would make sense since many the high-rise, downtown hotels are Hilton's. Sounds exciting!

On another subject, but still to do with downtown, there was a study recently on the "fasting gentrifying neighborhoods in the U.S.", and Roanoke's downtown (area code) was fourth on the list. Here are a couple links with more information and details:

And, just to thrown this in, here is a link to the list of the current and future downtown residential projects:

Great info man. I am excited to hear more about the hotel and maybe an update on the Riverside project down Jefferson Street. I had thought construction on phase 1 was going to begin this Spring. Guess that got delayed for whatever reason.

Thanks. There is a public hearing this coming Monday about expanding the Roanoke downtown service district to include the new Riverside development, so that may be what is holding progress up. Last I heard, development should start by July.

In downtown news, here is an article detailing the Monday night meeting I was talking about above:

Roanoke City Council votes to expand downtown to River's Edge - Roanoke.com

It doesn't mention when the Riverside development should begin, but says that it could take decades to build. I'll see if I can find out from Amanda at the Storefront blog if she knows.

I will be interested in seeing what kind of development the extension of "downtown" will bring. I always, thought that Jefferson could potentially be the "main street" of downtown Roanoke.

From what I have read in prior articles, the Riverside project will be built in phases for the next 10 years and $100 million later. All pretty exciting.

Downtown is also expanding westward from the YMCA to the West End Center using CDBG funds and public-private partnerships. Yay!

Yes, the YMCA area is a hot piece of real estate in my opinion. It would be great for office/residential development. I believe the old Y was slated for renovation but nothing has started as of yet, what a shame!

Not downtown, but looks like things are progressing in Wasena. I am willing to give any restuarant a shot that offers 36 beers on tap

Another successful project by Ed Walker. I do believe that I heard this may be his last project, but he has truly set a remarkable example in Roanoke and I hope his work will continue to rub off on other developers so that this type of redevelopment may continue on long after he retires.
