Default Roanoke Violence?

After reading up on some news and watching some videos from news stations about all kinds of stuff good and bad, I was wondering if the violence is in more of a certain area or areas. One of the videos was about a recent homicide. The newsman said it was "the city's 5th homicide of the year" about 20 seconds in to the video.

Areas to avoid?

Safest areas?

Is the norm?

Roanoke is pretty low-crime across the board. The few homicides are usually rooted in domestic violence, nothing random that I am aware of. You're asking about areas where urban crime doesn't apply, and you have to go further down 81 to get to where the rural crime starts (meth, etc.)

We live in Roanoke city and my son just got a traffic ticket for riding a skateboard on the sidewalk on the way to 7-11. (It was 7/11 and they were giving out free 7.11 oz. slurpees between 7 & 11!) Although I am pretty annoyed by it, that kind of police "attention" is definitely a sign of a low-crime area.

Thanks headnsouth! We would also consider the city if we could find some older more established neighborhoods. Gotta have a yard...and a garage.

Would like to be out of the flood zone too...just in case.

If It was one on grandin thats how they are,had a friend get ticketed for littering on sidewalk but really just missed the trash bin.,,Im guessing if ur in more inner city place they may not pay too much attention to it b/c they have other issues to handle

Yep, Grandin 7-11. Nice that that's all we have to worry about, but jeez, the kid doesn't even have his license yet!

My family and I live just a few houses from where the latest homicide took place. We bought the house less than a year ago, but this is enough to make me start house hunting again. The Courtland Road area was supposed to be the nice neighborhood in the "bad" part of town (NW Roanoke). I guess I shouldn't be surprised, considering which house the victim was found in front of, but this just hits too close to home. I've got a one year old to think about.

(Would be?) gentrification does have its bumps. I've known only one family to deliberately live in a "nice neighborhood" in an overall bad area back in NY, and they and their neighbors basically live in a medieval siege state.

Not worth it!

We moved here from out of state. We had no idea the reputation of the area until we'd already moved in.
