Question Roanoke Area - Houses w/Land - Neighborhoods

Hi there.

I'm looking to move to the Roanoke area and I'd like to buy a house with 3+ acres of land. Can anyone recommend a good area (views & inexpensive) within a one hour drive of the city? I prefer woods and mountains over open flat areas.

Also, has anyone noticed if the housing prices have fallen at all?

Thanks in advance...

-Mike

I would suggest looking at Floyd County, Craig County, and Botetourt County. Each of these areas are within one hour of Roanoke and make up the mountains that surround the county. You'll find better prices there also. You may also check into south Roanoke County along U.S. 221. I don't really keep up with prices in that area, but I used to live there from 1998- 2001. I would imagine you'd be happy with any of those areas, based on what you said.

Default Land in SW VA

I, too, have been looking for land in SW VA. Friends of mine live in Marion and Atkins (Smyth County) which is about 1 hour south of Roanoke. Smyth County is very reasonably priced with very low taxes. [moderator cut]
Wish you much success!

Question Where in Roanoke?

My family and I are looking to move to the Roanoke area, and would like some suggestions as to what part of town is best. I work in the healthcare field, and we have two small children. One is in elementary school. We will need to rent and would prefer a house with some space outside. Any suggestions?

Hi Sarah, there are many areas of Roanoke that would probably be suitable for you. The healthcare industry is probably the strongest employment sector in the region. I don't know your preferences for lifestyle but I will break down some areas to look at based on three types; city, suburban, and rural living. If you like city living, check out southwest Roanoke. There are many areas within very close distance to Roanoke Memorial Hospital that I would suggest. It's been 5 years since I lived in the Roanoke area and can't remember specific names but you should check out Raleigh Court, Grandin Road, Colonial Avenue (road?), Franklin Road, and there were some tremendous areas behind the hospital as well. For suburban living look into Roanoke County, Salem, and maybe Fincastle (Botetourt County). My wife and I lived in and loved southwest roanoke county. The schools there are outstanding, and there were a strong number of things to do. Parks, Shopping, Dining, etc. For more rural or country living you should look at Franklin County, Bedford County, and probably a little known secret in North Roanoke County called Catawba. If you like the country but want convenience to the city, this is sort of like a little rural utopia. It is a beautiful, sparsely populated area. It is about 20 - 30 minutes or so to downtown with a few little mom and pop stores along the way and a couple (literally) restaurants. Hopefully this information has given some insight to the region. I guess you can tell by some of my posts that I miss the place. Our family really did love the Roanoke area, but jobs moved and now we both work in industries that have very small job presence in the area and are almost stuck in a bigger city. Oh well... Good luck to you.
