The cat is out of the bag. There are plans to move the former Norfolk & Western 4-8-4 J Class #611 out of the Virginia Museum of Transportation where she has been on display since 1994 and get her rolling under her own steam again. A press conference should be getting underway at the VMT in about thirty minutes from when I wrote this post. Here is more information --

This would be incredible. Heard a piece on NPR about it- I don't think many realize that the 611 is looked at as one of the icons of steam, like the UP Challenger and the Pere Marquette 1225. I did get to see her steam for the last time as she went through Lynchburg.

Even though I'm old enough, I never saw the 611 under steam in the 80s and 90s steam program, so this would be very cool for me. It was one of the Nevers we always heard that seems to be coming true: "They'll never bring the 611 out of retirement."
