On to Vinton (Roanoke, Blue Ridge: employment, movies, shop)

This 54 year old man from NYC will move to Vinton sometime in early 2008 and semi-retire. I see that there is an OTB in Vinton, and as I am at times an excellent handicapper, I will at least have some recreational opportunities and or maybe a employment situation there. What else is in Vinton to do, so that I can assimlilate my self easily? It seems to me that there is a lot of churches in Vinton.Yes ? No? Parks? Any general employment opportunities ?

The OTB center is a nice place to hang out in Vinton. There isn't very much to do there, you'll have to go into Roanoke for movies, shopping, etc. I think the people there like to be left alone and prefer a slow paced type lifestyle.
The downtown business district has seen some improvement recently with a few new stores, etc but mostly Vinton is not the center of attention here.
It has a large number of churches, parks and its near the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The best thing I like about Vinton is that its easily accessible to the Blue Ridge Parkway and Smith Mountain Lake areas. Welcome!
