Hello all,
Even though my dream home on Rivermont Ave sold, I've not shaken my interest in Lynchburg. There seems to be a lot to recommend it-- colleges and universities, nearby outdoor activities, history-- and we're itchy to leave CA.

We were thinking of coming out for a few days and booking a house via VRBO or some such site (we like to "live" on vacation, you can't really do that with kids in hotels.)

We have two young kiddos, so we'd like to be able to take them to places where local parents hang out/field trip with kids (museums, parks, zoos?) as well as see the sites that locals would be most likely to send tourists (historic sites, mountains, etc.)

Would you all kindly share your recommendations where to go, what to see, what community events (like farmers' market or concerts in the park, whatever) are worth checking out..?

We would probably spend a few hours with a real estate agent, too, to scout out what neighborhood best suits what we like, the size property we can afford, and to see if randomly moving across the country is right for us anyway!

Thank you all kindly for any replies!

Best,
Sascha

Oh, if the family who bought 1919 rivermont decide that it just isn't for them, I'm still interested...

This might be fun! (I went here and did snow tubing with an 11 year old in the winter, but they have summer tubing too! - it is a beautiful drive as well!)

Wintergreen Resort

And of course the Amazement Square!

Amazement Square - The Rightmire Children's Museum, Lynchburg, Virginia.

And DEFINITELY the Peaks of Otter - if you aren't into tough hiking they have a shuttle bus that will take you most of the way to the top - where you only have a reasonable hike from that point - for a FANTASTIC view! Go on a clear day!

Check their website for when they have old homestead demonstrations on another "non-mountain" hiking trail (the Johnson Farm) - it looks like Wednesdays through Sundays, 9 to 4.

Here's a list of things to do: Visit Lynchburg, Virginia: Things To Do

Since you are scouting a possible relocation, also spend part of your time doing the things you usually do: grocery store, library, mall. It makes it easier to evision real day-to-day living.

Best of luck.
