I like the Roanoke area. S.O. and I are consider moving there in a couple years. We didn't find much in regards to Healthcare in the area. Everything else draws us in. However, S.O. is almost a nurse by the end of the year and next year I hopefully start nursing school.

Curious on hospitals and nursing homes/rehabs in the area?

Appreciate the feedback.

Finding medical jobs shouldn't be a problem. Carilion is the biggest with a level 1 trauma center and various parcels with different specialties. They also have partnered with Virginia Tech to form the VTC medical school/ research institute and what they hope will be a bio technical park in the coming years. Phase two of said project such as doybling the research institute has been approved and is on going.

There is also a good hospital in Lewis gale near the salem/Roanoke county line which seem to be hiring a lot as well.. not sure on nursing homes, but I know thereally are plenty in the area!

In addition, the Dept of Veterans Affairs has a full Medical Center on the Salem/Roanoke border.

Are you speaking as a patient, or as someone looking for a job?

It's a very good hospital this side of Charlotte or DC, and it's a very good place to work...

When we are researching an area, seldom do we use news reports or rankings because their selection criteria can be based on items many don't care about. Additionally, the wight laced on some items are do not match the weight others see as important. So, people tend towards the hospital report cards that are more directly aimed at an audit of care and services without fluff. It's these report cards that are not flattering to Carilion. Example, the report card places a greater weight on emergency room care versus variety of food in the cafeteria, whereas some ranking may feel room decor and presentation of art is more important than how often surgical supplies were left inside a patient.

But as someone who is looking to find a job in the medical field in the area knowing how the largest hospital in the area ranks among others in fields they may work in could be important.

It's not an issue of rankings, it's an issue of who's rankings. Rankings rate you compared to others where a report card tells you where a person stands in specific areas. If you were a nurse looking at the ranking, you will see general ratings. If a fail occurs in a category it can be for many reasons. The report cards shows what caused that fail. For a nurse, a failure where the doctors were found rushing surgeries and cutting corners isn't the same as the fail occurring because the nursing staff being overworked and assigned too many task simultaneously. So, five rotten stinking companies will still have a number one ranked company among those five. The report card may show the highest rank with a "D" while the others have "D-" or and "F".
