Hello. We are looking to move into this area but have some questions if anyone can help us please.
First off which areas are best to live in? Are there any specific areas we should avoid in particular?
Also, I like walking, are there any open areas to go walking/ hiking at?
Does anyone know about medical too? We are looking for a specialist for endometriosis and rheumatologist; are there any good ones in the area? My daughter really needs a good doctor.
What kind of town this this anyhow? Is this like the tiny cutesy town you see on tv where I can walk around and sit outside and drink coffee at a coffee shop or more like the one where you need a car for everything you do?

Sorry for so many questions but I just want to make sure everything is addressed before we make this big move. )
Thank you all for all your help.

Just a few thoughts here, but others will chime in - PLUS be sure and search back to some earlier threads - lots of valuable info!

Best areas? One of your choices will be between "suburban style" and "city style." Some of the more popular suburban areas are in the southern part of Roanoke county, lots centered around the 24018 area (aka Cave Spring) but you will find great options in all four directions. Salem is also a very popular area. If you like the older city neighborhoods, the 24015 and 24016 tend to be the most highly favored - south and west of downtown (aka Raleigh Court, Wasena, Old Southwest, Grandin Village area).

Lots of great walking options. Google Roanoke Greenways. Plus the Appalachian Trail is very close.

Medical services tend to be very good in Roanoke as it serves a large area of SW Virginia. I can't speak to the actual specialties.

There are individual neighborhoods (like Grandin Village, centered around the Grandin Theatre area, Crystal Spring retail area, the downtown area and downtown Salem as well) that match your "cutesy" description to a degree. More of the people live in the "get in your car and drive" setting.

GOOD LUCK - where are you coming from?? Be sure and read the "STICKY" ("Helpful Information for Relocation...") post at the very top - it has some helpful links.

I would add some of the things that drew us to Roanoke (relocating from the Houston TX area) - were the four distinct seasons - we get our share of winter - but not ferociously so - and the summers aren't nearly so hot as the place we left behind. The natural beauty is great, but on the other hand Roanoke is not a touristy-type town - it is a good mix of locals and folks who have been drawn here. We also like the size of the city - metro area about 300K.

Default Where are we coming from ...

That is a long story too haha
I'm originally from the former East Germany; my husband is from Buffalo. We lived there for a while but it's just too much snow. Then we lived about 7 years in The far western part of Texas and it's just too hot and not enough snow so we went back to NY to get nail by those 7 ft they got a few years back. 🤦*♀️ After we couldn't take the snow no more again we came back to TX but Austin area this time. Now we live 10 years here already and just want a change of scenery hahaha. I think we are trying to find something that has a little of everything. Houston is so beautiful but it's too scary to live there with all the hurricanes coming in all the times. But you will know what I'm talking about then.

Discussing the close-in urban neighborhoods I neglected South Roanoke (24014) which is the most desirable upscale close-in neighborhood .... higher prices but beautiful homes.

Well we used to be not a touristy type of town.... We are not a Williamsburg or Gatlinburg, but the push for tourism is huge and profits are rising every year.

OP you can have either setting in the area, but you need to think of Roanoke/Salem/Roanoke county as one bigger area. While they are governed separate people live work and shop in all 3.

To give you the best suggestion we need your budget and your preferences. Outdoor amenities are abundant here so no worries on that.
