Hey friends! My 2 year contract is almost up with Verizon Wireless. I am going to go get my new phone and renew for 2 more years in a couple weeks. My concern is that they will find out I moved and make me get a new phone number. I currently have a Richmond area code. I like this because all of my family reside in Richmond and its not long distance for them to call me. Do you think they will make me switch to 540? Just a stupid question I guess. Thanks! Have a nice weekend!!!!

It's a great question and I will have the same concern at some point. I'm hoping someone has the answer.

Guys, it's really not a Roanoke question, just call verizon and ask them. I moved from MD to NY and renewed my contract with cingular without changing my number, they didn't bat an eye.

Also you can probably get free long distance or at least free to anyone else with verizon, depending on your plan. Just ask at any verizon store.

Actually this question is a Roanoke question. I was asking specifically about the 540 area code and customers who had already gone through this after moving HERE. The long distance I was referring to is incomming calls. All of my outgoing calls are free of long distance. Thanks for your input.

Still not a 100 percent direct answer to your question, but when I moved from Indiana to Virginia, my cell carrier didn't ask a single question when I changed my address or when I went in to get a new phone/contract. They just verified my number and gave me the new phone.

That carrier wasn't Verizon, but I'd be surprised if you moving mattered to them in the least.

I hope this will help. I moved from Indianapolis to southern Indiana a couple of years ago and did not change my phone number, neither did my husband. We have renewed our contract since. We moved from area code 317 to 812 and have not had any trouble. We also use verizon.

There was a change several years ago to allow you to keep your # even if you switched carriers.

Certainly, AT&T/Cingular doesn't care---I serious doubt Verizon does either. Have you thought about using Vontage for your home phone? You can select any areacode/local exchange area in the country for your home phone service. You could even transfer your present cell number for use with your Vontage service if you wished!

I have never heard of any carrier having a problem with this.

I have a 276 area code cell phone but have NEVER lived in 276 area code area. I have lived everywhere from Alaska to Virginia with this cell phone number and had no problems.

A lot of people get a number local to family specifically FOR this reason, so people can call them on a local number.
