Oh AJ! Why oh Why are your moving to Pulaski? It has to be one of the deadest towns in Southwest virginia. I'll be honest with you, there is no hope of using your culinary skills in Pulaski. There is one Japanese Restaraunt, a steak house, and your basic fast food restaraunts. That's it! You would have to go to the Christiansburg/Blacksburg area (30min north) to find anything even close to fine dining opportunities.
I live about 15 minutes out of Pulaski so I say these things from first hand experience. It's depressing. The local government is making an effort to improve the town but it will be a number of years before that dream comes true.

Culinary School Graduate
Pulaski is not far from Blacksburg(30 mins) & Roanoke (1hr). Roanoke was named the top city in the state with the most restaurants per capita. Since tourism is getting bigger here this region is a good place to locate.

Unfortunately my friend, in the roanoke and surrounding area even as far as Lynchburg. There really is nothing that will be a credible use of your culinary talents. I am a graduate of the Culinary Institue of America and have searched the area thoroughly. about the only way you will find something is if you open it yourself.

I would recommend that you contact the Town House Grill in Chilhowie, VA. It's about a 45 minute drive from Pulaski, and is hands down the best restaurant in all of southwest VA. Exec Chef came from Alinea, and the Pastry Chef used to be head of pastry at Charlie Trotter's. Check out their blog: Town House Blog

I reside in Dublin. Which is about 10 minutes from Pulaski. Like the poster who was the first to reply. There is nothing in Pulaski. Outside of Nursing, EMS, Fire, or Law Enforcement. The Pulaski Police Department is a great department. The rescue squad is owned and operated by a agency known as: "REMSI(Regional Emergency Medical Services, Inc), or, "Regional EMS". Same agency. Pulaski has been dead for a while. After Pulaski Furniture cut all of their jobs and turned into an outlet store(They sell stuff instead of making it). Pulaski Furniture was one of the biggest employers of Pulaski Town, and Pulaski County. In my opinion, I feel that everybody has given up on Pulaski Town. If you look at Dublin and Fairlawn: they're coming along in a good way. Wal-Mart has created a lot of jobs, and not to mention the 4 Industrial Centers that have, and are employing a lot of people. As for your profession, try Radford first. About 15-20 miles north of Pulaski(Take Route 11 until you cross the river), that's Radford. They have a very large college population. If you have no luck there, try Christiansburg or Blacksburg. Even as far as Roanoke, Salem, Vinton, Hollins, Back Creek, Catawba, Mason's Cove, etc.
But for your own success, STAY AWAY FROM PULASKI, if that's the career you want; you won't find it in Pulaski. I've spent my whole 20 years in Pulaski County. I'm currently an EMT and I've gotten the "dis-luxury" of seeing how downhill Pulaski Town has went. Stay away from the Southside of Pulaski(other side of the tracks, across from the Police Department)- Magnox area, Meadowview area, Washington Square, Altoona area, and Peak Creek Village. That is where 70% of the crime happens, and where the Bloods are currently located. MS-13 was very large in Pulaski but they relocated to Radford do to not being able to compete with other small-time drug dealers in the area. Sure Pulaski is nice, but it's a dead end Town that's overwhelmed with Crime.

There are plenty of larger (and nicer) hotels in Roanoke, you might be able to find a job cooking there. Blacksburg is probably the closest place to Pulaski that has "fine dining" thanks to the retirees and Virginia Tech. I don't think there's going to be a lot of options in Radford but you can try.
Unfortunately Pulaski is a bit far from the Virginia mountain resorts, where there would be some real fine dining. Hot Springs is 2 1/2 hours away. There might be some fancy resorts in West Virginia north of Pulaski along the New River though.
Here's the southwestern Virginia Craigslist, try that.
craigslist: southwest VA classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events
