I can confirm of all the local governments (of the big 3 here anyway) Salem is by far the best run, with Roanoke county in the middle and Roanoke city stuck in the bottom.

When my wife and I moved to Roanoke, we looked at houses in Southwest County, South Roanoke, and Grandin Village. Of the three, we liked South Roanoke the best. It offered a walkable neighborhood with close proximity to downtown. Roanoke's a great place to live and raise a family. If you're moving here, consider South Roanoke!

RobDeanLaw ~Is the zip code for South Roanoke 24014? I'm trying to map out the neighborhoods so we can drive by and visit in a few weeks. Thank you.

I have confirmed South Roanoke is a neighborhood and not an area - south part of Roanoke. Still learning my way around.

I'd appreciate any recommendations for a realtor (preferably one with good reviews online).

I would like to know if it is safe by the hospitals and police stations? Also if there a certain part of town that is more safe than the others like sw, nw, se, ne?

Safest to so so is SW, NE, NW, SE in that order. Overall I don't find Roanoke to be unsafe but that is just me...

Remember the Quadrants usually refer to the city. Honestly it depends on your budget to where we could recommend living.

My order would be SW, NE, SE, and NW. Most of SW is nice and safe. Most of NW is not safe at night.

For those not familiar with the area, I think it's important to note that the quadrant thing is a generalization. For example the SE quadrant includes some somewhat rundown areas but also includes some of the most upscale parts of South Roanoke. And meanwhile the well-thought-of southwest quadrant also includes some edgy neighborhoods west of downtown! So use these as a ROUGH guide!!

Reading through this great thread raised a couple of questions that I hope someone will respond to.

1. Does the Vinton Police Department continue to be overbearing as reported in this thread?

2. Any comments on the Belmont neighborhood regarding safety? I suspect from reading this thread that the answer my hinge on where in Belmont one is located. I found the Facebook page for the neighborhood association and it looks like many folks are involved in trying to improve/maintain the community.

Thank you!
