Default rentals without leases?

Is anyone aware of any inexpensive rentals, preferably south of the city, that are available on a month-to-month basis? My husband will be moving there in a month or two and needs a temporary place to stay until I find a job and we find something suitable for our family of three. Until then we have a mortgage to pay, so we'd like to find an efficiency or something small that rents for $400 or less. Is that feasible?

Thanks

Two good places to start looking:

Craigslist: gives a good idea of housing that is available and how much it might cost. Use Google maps with it to help locate the places relative to town.

craigslist: roanoke classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events

And of course, the Roanoke Times. Find the Classifides.

That might be tough to find long-distance. It might be easier to find if you were local, but even then...might not be the simplest thing to locate. Might want to look into a hotel for a week or two and just put some serious time looking once you are local. You will find a lot of signs up as you are driving around...probably a lot more than you will find online advertisements. There are a lot of apt complexes in the Roanoke area...many of them do not have websites or do online advertising. Definitely keep an eye on the Roanoke Times too. Hope that helps...and that you find a place without too much hassle!

Thanks Hokieed and j1n. My husband will be making a visit in a week or two , so I have been checking out craigslist and the Roanoke Times to see what might be available. There are a few realtors who advertise in the Times. They seem to have some things that might work, but it's hard to tell until he sees them in person. I'll tell him to drive around the areas that appeal to him and look for signs-that's a good idea. He needs to have an area for storage too, so that complicates it some.
