What brought me to Virginia..mmmm.. a really bad divorce! Actually have an ex brother-in-law and sister-in-law from Virginia and fell in love with it years and years ago. Its a really great place to raise a family especially if you are a single mom. And there are sooo many things to do and keep kids busy. The job market is much better than at home in a small town. And the history and culture are amazing and everyone is so friendly. And to be honest.. my kids are almost grown and its a great place for people going through "empty-nest" too!

Texaschic, I just read all your emails and may I say WELCOME to Covington! My husband and I moved here from Florida in Feb. We LOVE it. He works for CSX and was transferred here. We found a cute place overlooking MeadWestvaco. We have been to so many fun places around here. In the early Spring we went to the Maple Festival in Monteray, some of the Wineries, this past weekend we went to WV to the Cranberry Bog, it was great! We also had a Labor Day Parade. I grew up in a small town in PA and I missed all that. I spendt most of my adult life in "Big" cities, so I am happy to be back up North. We are so looking forward to Fall, there apparently is a big Fall Festival in Clifton Forge in October, my husbands parents are coming up for that and it should be fun. Again Welcome to Covington! When are you actually making the move? Good Luck and travel safe!

Thank you so much Daffy! It's nice to hear from someone that lives in the area! I'm not very familiar with the local businesses yet, so pardon my asking what is CSX? Sounds like ya'll have been having a wonderful time taking in all the local attractions! I can't wait til Fall either.. I have seen photos and it's breathtaking! Looks like we will be making the move sometime in late September/ early October. Do ya'll have children in the city school system? Thanks again for the welcome!

so texaschic.. your making the move to cov? what school system are the kids gonna be in? just somelast minute input, right now i would go ahead and start the kids in covington because the kids in ghany are very very very very "clickish" of course thats everywhere but if you start in cov. you can still have friends at alleghany and the two school systems might merge because of these hard economic times and for the lack of 21 century school buildings in both school systems right now covington and alleghany and going down hill don't dig yourself into a hole you can't get out of.

thanks for that tidbit of info SV. We were thinking of putting them in ghany school system because every local we've talked to boasts about them.... BUT the home we bought is actually in the city so we are kinda on the fence now. I've heard (and read) alot about the school buildings themselves and how much ghany is in desperate need of a new high school. I hate to hear that it is sooooo clickish...but I guess that's anywhere. Are they really considering a merge? Would Covington hold all the students from both campuses?

no they would share everything in that matter of a merge but i wouldn't worry bout that because it wouldn't go down well Ghany and Cov.. are like orange juice after you brushed your teeth intense rivalry hahahahah.. but anyways my sons went to ghany schools my oldest finished in 8th grade and my youngest finished in 5th grade before we moved.. Mountain View Elementary is the best elementary school.. Clifton Middle is the only county middle school and its good.. my son said its boring compared to high school but ohh well hehe.. what grades are your kids in.. my sons could probabky know some people to helo them make friends with.. good luck in ghany.... and the hour drive to Noke for shopping (: SV2012

I was a little worried that the folks in Virginia would think of us as odd country hillbillys... (ya know us Texans tend to think of everyone North of us as Yankees).... but from all the posts I've read in the different forums I think we will fit in just fine! Our querky accents & all! I've also heard a lot of people say that Virginia is still considered the south... God Bless America!
All those that may be Yankees... take no offense please... I love all of you! My husband (God bless his heart) is a Yankee also!

Im from Virginia and we think of Texas as out West and Westerners. Virginia more like the Old South. In fact, the hillbilly stereotype is sometimes used on folks from SW Virginny. The birthplace of Country Music and such. I never thought of Texas as the South, lol Are y'all Southerners out there?

LOL.... ummmm yea we're southern.. and in my little town if you arent from here then it's pretty difficult to understand what people are saying.. yeah it's that bad. I guess I always thought of every other state as being above or beside us (on the map that is..lol).... and since there are none below us... hence deep South.
