Roanoke and Harrisonburg are very far apart.
Roanok is big and with big cities come more problems. Harrisonburg is a college town(James Madison -aka JMU). It would be easy for you to find a job in either area. I would go with Harrisonburg.
My 3rd child was born at Rockingham Memorial in Harrisonburg....the schools are great. I moved to FL.
4yrs ago and am now moving back to VA...Born there
raised there, should have stayed there!
As for Companies...Polar air inc./Star heating&cooling
Climate control inc./Excel Heating&cooling/Landes H&C/N Tab H&C and more! Google Heating and air coditioning co Harrisonburg Va. FYI--Staunton Va is a
Small but great town for safety and kids lived there too...not far from Harrisonburg

Hi Green, I have a sister in Rockingham ( we all say Harrisonburg though ), she works for JMU, been working for them for years, and she is very happy there. I Love the area, my kids love it there, we live in south Fl. and I want to move. I've been considering TN. but now I am leaning towards VA. the only thing that for me would make VA. perfect would be to abolish the state income tax, then VA would be perfect! but putting that aside Harrisonburg is great! great for kids too.

I live 20 minutes north of Harrisonburg. It is a great, quiet place to raise a family. The city itself is very small compared to Roanoke with a population of about 40,000 or so. Someone already mentioned several of the bigger heating/cooling companies that you might want to check into.

As for areas close to the city, take a look north of Harrisonburg at the town of Broadway. It is growing but still maintains a small town, family-oriented feel. To the south of Harrisonburg, look at Bridgewater and Dayton. Both are nice quiet towns that are a little closer to Harrisonburg than Broadway.

Crime in the area seems to be pretty low. You can get a decent house in Broadway for around 200,000 but you could search reality web sites for better info.

Hope that helps!

I would pick Roanoke over H'burg anyday, especially in terms of overall employment opportunities and quality of life. Roanoke is at the beginning of its renaissance and is a great place to live, especially for families. The cost of living in Roanoke is also much more affordable in terms of what you get for the money. Also, there are far more cultural and entertainment events to attend in Roanoke. I am not sure when the last time a concert came to H'burg was...

Hello, I have lived in Roanoke for about 2 years now and my ex girlfriend is a JMU Alumni. I spent many weekends in Harrisonburg and personally it is just a but too small for me. She loved it but I think aside from JMU there isnt much more there. I couldnt imagine actually living there, I think if she lived there and didnt attend the school she would have felt differently about the area. It is just very quaint and that isnt for me, not much of a city at all. I guess it depends on the individual and what you want out of a town. Of course Harrisonburg does have everything you need (ie: many big box stores). One more thing to add about Harrisonburg, you may never guess it but there is a pretty large latino gang population there (Crips, Sir13, and Latin kings..) and its such a small town its easy to get into the wrong area. Roanoke has a much larger city, lower cost of living (you get more for your bang) and probably more job oppourtunties as well. I am quite biased because I have fallen in love with Roanoke for its charm and conviences. Best of luck to you!
