Smith Mountain Lake or Lake Norman, NC??

Unless you love bumperboats, the fishing, sailing, and boating are far more enjoyable on SML than Norman. Depends on what you are looking for - a suburban lake or an exurban lake. With the development at Westlake Corner, the northwest areas of SML feel a lot more suburban while it gets a whole lot more rural the further east you go on the lake.

Hi, I have lived on Smith Mt. Lake for almost 20 yrs. When we moved here it was such a wonder! Homes here are expensive if you are looking to buy lake front as that is what we have. Like a lot of ppl. have said, the big shopping centers are mainly in Roanoke or Lynchburg. But the lake is very over crowdered as more stores , etc. and homes are being built. The schools are very good ,at least in Bedford Co. I grew up in Roanoke and Northern Va. The worse thing about living on the lake is..... if you have an emergency and need lifesaving help, you may be waiting an hour.I had to several times. The water patrols are better. Hope you check it out . The lake consistes of Bedford Co., Franklin Co, Pittsvainia Co. Just remember most speed is 45 to 55. Which isn't good being as conjested as it now it. Honestly...
