Possible Relocation to Lexington Area
hey everyone. I had a phone interview today for a job in Natural Bridge, VA and was invited to a personal interview at my earliest convenience.
I'm still working out the travel plans, but I will be going down there the week of the 18th sometime for my personal interview and to check out the area. I plan on looking at some apartments getting to know the location while there.
I just wanted to check and see if anyone had any opinions about good places to live that are cheap given my job location. The person I interviewed with said most of the staff live in Lexington, and from the information I can find that seems like it'd probably be best. But I'm curious about other people's opinions.
As far as things that are important to me - cost of living is most important. A cheap apartment in a safe area (though all of Lexington seems safe according to this website) is more important to me than a nice apartment. If I can get something cheaper outside of Lexington that'll be closer to work, then I'm okay driving into Lexington when I need to do something (i.e. see a movie).. so cost is of upmost importance.
Distance is important too. I'd like to stay within a 20 minute drive one-way to work...any further and it's not worth it to me.
Also..if there's anything specific I should remember when I'm down there or know, it'd be great if you could let me know. From what I've found so far I should like the area, and I'm excited to see it soon! Thanks!

Buena Vista is another place you can check out. it's 6 miles from Lexington and You can either take I-64 down to Natural Bridge or you can go 501 South from Buena Vista to 130 West into Natural Bridge. The time travel from Lexington or Buena Vista is the same.

Thanks for the information! The other towns around the area (Natural Bridge, for instance) are pretty small, right? I guess I'll see first hand next week when I'm there, but from the sounds of it I'm better off living in Buena Vista or Lexington it seems (if I get the job). Is that righT?

"Small" depends upon where you are. Lexington is a little over 6,800 pop.; Buena Vista [You DO know it's pronounced BYU-na Vista, not Bwena Vista, right?] is a bit over 6,300. The smaller places are in-between and around.
Good luck.

I do now! What's with towns not being pronounced how they sound? lol. I guess you can tell the locals from the out-of-towners that way, huh? Those who pronounce it wrong aren't from there.
I'm not surprised about the town size. I don't consider 6,800 or so "small" but many other people do, I know. I grew up in a town about that size.
The pictures I've seen of the area are really nice and i can't wait to head down there this upcoming Sunday! Thanks for all the advice. Hopefully soon I'll be telling you that I got a job downthere!

I'm late to the party, but...
If you're still considering moving and cost of living is the major issue then Lexington is not where you want to move. It's by far one of the most expensive places to live in the state excluding NoVa. Property tax is (I believe) .93/100. My wife and I bought a house in Buena Vista in July. Their tax is .87/100 and going up to .91/100. The county is roughly .53/100. If I were you I'd look in the county. I'd personally not move to NB or Glasgow. There is just nothing there and it's an extra 20 minutes to Lexington where most of the restaurants/WalMart/things to do are.
Don't get me wrong. I love the area and have lived here most of my life. Moved to NoVa and lived in VA Beach for awhile, but like it here.
If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

My friends and I are planning a get together and meeting up in Lexington (as it is half way point). Can you recommend where to stay and where to dine? We would like a relaxed atompshere with a nice bar and good food!

Check out The Palms www.thepalmslexington.com on the corner of Nelson and Jefferson St in downtown Lexington. Relaxed atmosphere, you will find a mix of college students along with the older crowd, residents and tourist. Great food! Generous menu of beer, wine and cocktails.
What kind of hotel you looking for?
Hope you have a great time in Lexington.

Oh the memories in the Palms. They do have good food, but unless you go early (before 7:00) it gets VERY smokey and very very crowded. It's easily the most popular place for the students to go as well as most locals. Not a big place either.
If you want a good meal I'd personally go to G Willakers.

G Wilikers is a nice restaurant indeed located inside the Best Western at Hunt Ridge just tables and chairs. and hotel guest....... I was trying to give them something as far as atmosphere. If I were sending to good restaurants it would be . Cafe Michel', The Sheridan Livery, The Southern Inn & The Bistro.
