Default Possible relocation to Lynchburg

While still up in the air, there is a possibility I may be relocating to Lynchburg, and I have the good and bad of the area. I'm 41 and single. I have lived in major cities most of my life, and I am aware of the culture shock I may experience in terms of slowness of life and potential conservatism.

How are the regional outdoor activities in the region: Skiing, hiking, scuba diving, boating, etc, since that is where I may get my enjoyment?

Smith Mtn Lake has very popular boating. Hiking is very close along the Blue Ridge just minutes away. Skiing in Va is iffy but Wintergreen is the best and it's only an hour away. Liberty is adding an artificial slope.

If you've lived in "major cities" most of your life, you will be very disappointed with Lynchburg. It's a sleepy small town, not much excitement for someone single and 41, unless you are heavily into the church scene. I wouldn't recommend it for your living enjoyment. You'll be very disappointed, I'm afraid.

I'm 41, have a business here in Lynchburg, and I love it. Outdoor activities are numerous, particularly if you appreciate Hiking, climbing, mountain biking, etc. Boating (motor) can be found at Smith Mtn. Lake, but the James is a great canoeing/kayaking river. I've enjoyed some really good downhill and excellent XC skiing at Snowshoe and Canaan, in WV (2.5-3 hr drive); Wintergreen has its good skiing days and is 45 min. away. Not much of a club scene, but there is a growing list of great eateries and Lynchburg is located in an area where day trips can range fromsmall cities around the region to a train or car trip into DC. Now if you are into the bar scene, Seersucker's dismal view might be somewhat close to the truth, but adventurous singles can have a great life here.

The Bull Branch has a pretty hot bar scene for the hip crowd in Lynchburg.
