I’m hoping for input regarding modular home dealers in Roanoke and surrounding counties. Anyone have a dealer they would recommend (to use or not use ) after a construction experience? Also, any tips on the modular home purchase/construction process would be appreciated.

I have a friend who had loads of problems with Bonbrook, but his house and he are quirky (more custom than modular) so I wouldn't rule them out. North American Housing has a manufacturing facility in Boones Mill (North American Housing - Homepage). According to Google their local # is 334-5000. Then there is Turnkey Homes of Burnt Chimney (TurnKey Homes of Burnt Chimney, Virginia - Modular Homes, Stick Built Homes, Lots & Land for Sale At Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia). I think I've seen alot of Turnkey homes in the area, and they seem well established. Turnkey might be your best place to start.

BMA,

Very good question! Last fall while on a land hunting trip, my wife and I stopped by a Palm Harbor display while traveling through Christiansburg (Modular Homes | Manufactured Homes | Mobile Home | Palm Harbor). I see from their website that they have a display in Lynchburg too.

Like you, I have little knowledge/experience with modular homes, but we are considering it (and maybe log/timber) for a weekend retreat in Franklin County. We moved here from Northern Neck VA, and we ran into several folks who built modulars. However, a story circulated last year that two house fires in modulars there were blamed on the electrical wiring, so I need to do more research. I also wonder how customization affects your final cost since I see the statement 'costs are typically/usually lower than stick-built' on some of the web info.

Anyway, I hope to see more responses to your post!

did you end up purchasing a home from Turnkey Homes? If so, I hope your experience wasn't as awful as mine!
