You might be very pleasantly surprised. Look at some places Like Blue Ridge...right outside Roanoke near Hollins University.

How much could you spend on a house? J1n is right, there are some good buys close-in to Roanoke. Here are some examples:
Roanoke, VA, 24018 - MLS ID#734957 - Single Family Home Real Estate - REALTOR.com®
Roanoke, VA, 24018 - MLS ID#738149 - Single Family Home Real Estate - REALTOR.com®
Roanoke, VA, 24018 - MLS ID#735289 - Single Family Home Real Estate - REALTOR.com®
FWIW, your growing season is longer in the Roanoke Valley and in Franklin County than it is in Floyd. Something to consider. Floyd/Christiansburg/Blacksburg is in Zone 6 while we're on the warm side of Zone 7.

Just wanted to add that Mad Scientist Sean was successful in recruiting my wife and I to buy land in Franklin County -- in the western portion called Algoma. (there are a few pictures in my ALBUM icon) It's in a small valley area between the Blue Ridge mountains to the west (and Floyd beyond) and by Middle Ridge on the east. It's a very scenic area IMO. It's a 15-minute drive back to Boones Mill, 30 minutes back to Tanglewood area.
We considered Floyd County too (briefly), but one drive out and back Bent Mountain Road nixed that.

A caution... don't expect to find regular work as an electrician in any of the places mentioned. Most contractors in the region are laying off and scaling down, not hiring.

Sean,
Thanks man! But I still need a mountain cam and a cow cam. Can I pick those up at Southern States?

Hi,
I was just curious as to what you folks decided. My situation and family seems similar to yours and we seem pulled toward the same things. ( land, art, liberal leanings, ) We love Floyd but it does seem small and I'm unsure about the school system. We are leaning toward Blacksburg.
I would love to know if you have made the move and if so how you feel about where you landed.

bear, I'm not the OP, but my story might help a little bit. We just got a place in Floyd County, down by Willis (which is in the SW part of the county by Buffalo Mtn.), and we will be moving there in May. I will be driving to Charlotte, NC (!) twice a week for work.
We've been working on the (previously abandoned) house recently, so have had a lot of opportunity to talk to many different people in the area. Some are native Floydians, and some are transplants from places like New York, PA, FL, etc. I don't know about liberal vs. conservative, but everybody we've met so far is as friendly as can be.
I'd say that if you can deal with the commute, then you'd likely be very happy in Floyd.
I'm unusual in that I've always chosen to "pay for" quality of home life with a long commute. To me, its well worth it, but I know I'm in the minority.
Anyway, good luck with your search!

Hi bear,
We aren't planning to move till at least next year, so we haven't decided yet. Sorry to take a while to reply - I think citydata has some weird delay where they don't email to tell you about new messages right away!
