Best Hotel to stay for first Visit to Roanoke
Thinking of relocating to Roanoke, have never been there. Trying to figure out the best hotel to stay at that would allow us to check out the area in 2/3 days, just to get a feel for the area. So, which one would put us in the middle of everything? Don't want to stay downtown. Clean, reasonable & safe. Checked out hotels online, but not knowing the area, it is hard to pick the one that would allow us to cover a lot of ground, quickly.

If you don't rule out staying downtown then you could spoil yourself at Hotel Roanoke It would be hard to find a cleaner or safer hotel in the region. You'd be close to everything and you could walk from the hotel, through the enclosed catwalk, right into the heart of downtown to find shopping, restaurants, museums. Another option is the Holiday Inn on Electric Rd. It's close to the heart of the Roanoke area. FYI, anything out near the airport is slightly removed from the middle of everything.
Hope this helps,
Sean

I agree with Sean. The Hotel Roanoke would be the best option (it's where I stayed during my first visit to Roanoke!) if you can pay a little extra.
I just went online and you can get a basic room for $119, which is not as bad as I thought it would be. Parking is complimentary valet, so figure in tipping. There's a nice catwalk over to the downtown market area where everything is walkable - farmer's market, restaurants and shops. It's the nicest and most centrally located and safe hotel in Roanoke I think.
My second choice would also be Holiday Inn Tanglewood. Though I've never stayed there myself, it is a hotel of choice by some local companies to put up interviewees. It's also near some restaurants and stores in the Southwest area of Roanoke, though the area isn't as walkable as downtown. I found the Holiday Inn Tanglewood on Priceline for $84 per night.

If you are considering relocating to Roanoke City, I would recommend Rose Hill B&B in the Old Southwest area. A great place in a residential setting.
If you are shopping suburbs, then maybe not-so-much.

I will third Sean. When I saw the thread title I immediately thought Hotel Roanoke or Holiday Inn Tanglewood.

Best hotel to stay in
I have visited Roanoke thee times, in September, October, and the first week in January, my hotel stays were paid for by the company recruiting my husband, and I stayed at Hotel Roanoke. It was very easy to get around from, and easy to walk across the walkway and go to restaurants in the downtown area. The hotel itself is very nice, and I really don't know what the room rates were, as it was corporate paid, but I think it was in the low 100's, with a very nice room, nice bed with high thread count white sheets, and lots of feather pillows on the bed. They also have complimentary, yummy chocolate chip cookies! My last visit was to find a rental house, which I found in Southwest County of Roanoke. We don't have kids in school, but the school district is Cave Springs High School, which I understand is a very good school district. Also not too far from North Cross School, which I drove by multiple times in my driving around. It's convenient to Sun Tennis Center, where I hope to get involved in playing tennis, and aboaut 3.5 miles to Roanoke Athletic Club, which I joined while I was there. We are moving to the area around February 23-25, depending on when the moving truck gets there!

Knew I could count on you folks....thank you so much, we will check out these places for sure. We are not looking to spend a lot of time at the Hotel, as this trip will be spent covering a lot of ground trying to check out the area. Wish it could be for pleasure and we could do fun things, but we will be looking at neighborhoods, schools and such. Thank you again, and wow, even checking rates for us, that is awesome. If most of the people in Roanoke are as nice as I see from all of you, it sounds like just the kind of place we are looking for.

I think you will be very pleased with the friendliness of the locals here. I have felt very welcomed here since moving from Richmond 20 months ago! What neighborhoods are you looking at?

Haven't really decided on a particular neighborhood, will probably narrow it down closer to a visit. Still researching Schools, checking out stats, looking at local papers online to see what the goings on are in Roanoke from week to week. Reading posts, etc. Will rent for before buying anyway, just to make sure the area is what we are looking for. Schools will be most important, level of education and safety, main priorities. Checking Roanoke first, then Richmond, VA also. If Roanoke wins us over, we may not go to Richmond to look.
